When it's not going right, go left.

I canceled my riding lesson Thursday. I've been under the weather and I knew I wasn't fit to ride.

They rescheduled for this morning, and I got put on a horse I hadn't ridden in two years. The last time I was on her, she tripped and I came off hard.

So I was nervous before I was even mounted.

Forty-five seconds in, she tripped again.

I sat there a second. Then I gathered myself, and we had a good ride.

Not a great one. I rode carefully. I gave maybe sixty percent of what I've got on a good day, because sixty percent was what I had.

It was enough.

We treat showing up like it's all or nothing — full effort or don't bother. But most of real life is the middle. The days you show up smaller, moving slower, expecting less of yourself, and still there.

Canceling Thursday wasn't quitting. Sixty percent today wasn't failing.

Knowing the difference between I need to rest and I need to adjust — that's the same thing I'm listening for when I'm working with your body.

If today is a sixty percent day, go left. Just don't go home.
