The four vaccines the health department in our state is proposing to take out of the schedule for school entrance protect from diseases that are mostly airborne or contact .
There have been 5 documented death from measles complications , mumps is going thru like wildfire thru a football team . A side effect of mumps in males can be sterility. Both of these are the “ Ms” of the MMR vaccine . This one doesn’t cause autism , neither do circumsicion nor Tylenol .
So:
HIB meningitis has quite high mortality rate . One baby just died in Montana according to reports in last month. By the end of it if child survived deafness and blindness were the least of the sequelae.
Varicella not only is highly contagious it can have complications besides the ugly scabby scars producing rash that can lead to pneumonia , meningitis . I almost lost my whole pre med semester due to it as many of you know. 19 yrs old final exam week pre med . My dad had it in early late 30’s early 40’s I never left the house ., I was exposed multiple times but just did not get it . Not fun . Plus later in life there’s higher possibility of shingles which is painful , Ugly and a baby or an under-immunized person can get varicella from a person suffering with shingles .
Pneumococcal pneumonia vaccine not only protects little ones it protects our parents and grandparents, immunocompromised, asthmatics , children without spleen ( born without it or removed for whatever reason ) not only from pneumonia , sinusitis, severe ear infections but also meningitis .
Hepatitis B can be transmitted mom to baby and any body fluids . Can lead to cirrhosis and/or liver cancer . Do toddlers/kids bite each other or share pacifiers / bottles ? No , it’s not an IV drug user or unprotected s*x thing only .
I have been in practice long enough to have seen the aftermath of every single one of these diseases and others that are vaccine preventable.
Evidence based .
Their “ board” states that them removing them will not mean lack of availability. I SURE HOPE SO. I doubt insurances will tag along as a hospitalization and sequelae of these vaccine preventable diseases would be more expensive to deal with … but then again can we really trust them to make decisions based on Science and not their purses ?

I have been in practice long enough to have seen the consequences of this devastating disease . Trying to get it off the vaccination schedule in our state or elsewhere simply because “ no one has seen it in a while “ is simply irresponsible.
The reason it has not been reported in a while is …? Take a wild guess …

A child in Montana has reportedly died from invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib).

For many parents today, Hib is a disease they have barely heard of. There’s a reason for that.

Before routine Hib vaccination, this bacterium was a leading cause of bacterial meningitis in young children and could also cause bloodstream infections, pneumonia and life-threatening swelling of the airway. Today, Hib disease is uncommon in the United States because vaccination dramatically reduced it.

That success can create a dangerous illusion: when vaccines work well enough, we stop seeing the diseases they prevent, and eventually we can forget why we vaccinate against them in the first place.

Even RFK Jr’s proposed childhood vaccine schedule changes did not touch the Hib vaccine, which is usually given starting at 2 months old and then 2-3 additional doses are given depending on the product used. However, his anti-vaccine rhetoric and other disinformation campaigns over the years aimed at other vaccines is possibly causing a halo effect where people are less inclined to vaccinate their children for all vaccines.

This child’s death is a tragedy. It is also a reminder that vaccine-preventable diseases have not disappeared. The protection matters precisely because these infections can still be devastating.

Vaccines don’t just prevent illnesses. Sometimes, they prevent the illnesses we’ve been fortunate enough to forget.
