While physicians treat the infection itself, audiologists focus on how the infection affects your hearing. πŸ‘‚ Our role is to evaluate how much fluid is present, measure how it’s affecting sound transmission, and monitor changes over time.

If you’re experiencing muffled hearing, pressure, or repeated infections, we can perform tests that show exactly how the middle ear is functioning. For children, these evaluations are especially important; persistent fluid can interfere with speech and language development during crucial learning stages. πŸ‘Ά

Audiologists don’t prescribe antibiotics, but we do guide you through the next steps. If fluid lasts longer than three months or infections keep returning, we’ll refer you to an ENT who may recommend ear tubes to restore proper drainage and clearer hearing. 🩺

We’re here to help you understand what’s happening, track your progress, and make sure your hearing stays protected. πŸ’›

Earwax is one of the most misunderstood parts of ear health, but it’s actually incredibly helpful. πŸ€—

The glands lining the outer portion of your ear canal naturally produce wax, and this wax works together with tiny hairs (called cilia) to trap dust, debris, and foreign particles before they reach the delicate areas deeper in the ear. In other words, earwax is your ear’s built‑in protection system.πŸ›‘οΈ

Many people assume earwax is dirty or needs to be removed regularly, but in most cases, your ears do a great job managing it on their own. Earwax is helpful! Let’s keep it where it belongs. 🌿

Happy World Heart Day. πŸ‘‹

The inner ear depends entirely on healthy blood flow to function. When circulation is compromised, the ears often feel it first. It is one of the reasons hearing loss is so common in people managing high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.

Caring for your heart is caring for your hearing. The two have always been the same conversation. β€οΈπŸ‘‚

The FDA created a list of eight symptoms that mean you should skip OTC hearing aids completely and see an audiologist or ENT immediately:

Here they are:
🚩 Fluid, pus, or blood draining from your ear in the past 6 months
🚩 Sudden or rapidly progressing hearing loss
🚩 Hearing loss that is noticeably worse in only one ear
🚩 Ringing or buzzing in only one ear
🚩 Chronic dizziness or severe vertigo
🚩 Pain or discomfort in the ear
🚩 A visible deformity of the ear
🚩 A feeling that your ear is completely plugged

If any of these apply to you or someone you love, an OTC device is not the answer. These are signs that something medical may be happening, and putting a hearing aid in without knowing why could delay the care that actually matters.

Ever feel completely drained after a long conversation, especially somewhere noisy?

That exhaustion is real, and it has a mechanism.

When hearing is compromised, your brain has to fill in the gaps, predicting words, reading faces, working backward from context. That effort is not free. It borrows from the same resources you use for memory and focus, which is why a two-hour dinner can leave you as tired as a full workday.

Researchers call this cognitive load. It is the reason untreated hearing loss shows up in places that have nothing to do with your ears.

The long-term picture is worth knowing too. A landmark Johns Hopkins study following adults over more than a decade found that dementia risk rose alongside the degree of hearing loss, mild loss was associated with roughly double the risk, and the association grew from there. That is a link, not a verdict, and hearing loss is one factor among many.

But it is one of the few that can actually be measured and addressed.

If listening has started to feel like work, that is worth looking into.

Did you know your inner ear does TWO jobs? ✌️

The one everyone knows about: hearing.
The one most people don't: balance.

Deep inside your ear is a system called the vestibular system, and it is constantly sending signals to your brain about where your body is in space. When something disrupts it, whether that's age, infection, injury, or certain medications, the result can feel like dizziness, unsteadiness, or that unsettling sensation that the room is moving when it isn't.

What makes this easy to miss is that balance symptoms and hearing symptoms often show up together. Ringing in one ear and dizziness. Sudden hearing change and vertigo. One without the other. The combinations vary, but the origin is often the same system.

If you have been experiencing unexplained dizziness or have mentioned it to your doctor without getting a clear answer, a hearing evaluation is often the first step in understanding what is actually happening. Not because the audiologist always has the answer, but because the ear is usually where the investigation starts.

Balance Awareness Week is a good reminder that some symptoms deserve a closer look than a grab bar can fix! πŸ‘‚
