Have you ever played the board game Life? It had me thinking about all the choices and twists and turns that bring us to our mat. Returning to our practice over and over isn’t easy. Being with yourself through the waves of life. Resisting the urges to numb. The stories of our lives. Grateful to show up through it all 🙏

90 classes!

At this point, we’re pretty sure Erin and Holly live here now. 😄

They’ve each reached 90 classes in our Summer Yoga Challenge, averaging 2 classes a day for the last 68 days. That’s a whole lot of showing up, sweating, breathing, and laughing.

Our Summer Yoga Challenge helps keep us accountable. It’s a visual reminder that growth comes from simply showing up for yourself, one practice at a time.

Erin and Holly, thank you for showing us what dedication, consistency, and joy in the practice look like. You inspire all of us!

Words that stay with you 🤍 “Long before the world called it August, women called it the turning…Welcome to the month that was made, on purpose, for what you have been becoming all year.”

Long before the world called it August, women called it the turning.

Not the ending of summer. Not the beginning of the end. The turning. The hinge. The month when the year, quietly and without announcing itself, begins to move from growing to giving back.

The elders say the very oldest peoples knew this. They knew it long before there were calendars, long before there were names for months, long before anyone had thought to number the days. They knew it because their bodies knew it. Because their fields knew it. Because the light knew it and the fruit knew it and the grain knew it, and the women who tended all of these things could feel the turning in the air the moment it began.

The old ones would gather at the beginning of this month. They would bake the first loaf of the new grain. They would break it, and share it, and offer a piece back to the earth she came from — because they understood that this was the month when the earth began to hand back what she had grown. The first bread. The first fruit. The first heavy grain. They did not thank her only at the end of the harvest. They thanked her at the beginning — because they knew that a beginning is a holy thing, and the beginning of the giving-back is the holiest beginning of all.

They had many names for this turning. Every land had its own. But the elders say the truest name was never a word at all. It was a feeling. A small settling in the chest at the beginning of the eighth month. A quiet pause. A knowing. It has turned. She is giving back now.

The elders say the month itself was made on purpose. That in the very beginning of things, when the year was still being shaped, the Ancients gathered in council — the Sun and the Sky, the Sea and the Earth, the Forest and the Night — and they looked at what they had made together and saw that something was missing.

They had made a month for arriving. They had made a month for growing. They had made a month for standing tall in the fullest of the light. And they had made months for releasing, and months for resting, and months for the long slow sleep of the world. But they had not yet made a month for ripening.

Ripening, they understood, was its own thing. It was not growing — a ripe fruit is done growing. It was not releasing — a ripe fruit has not yet let go. Ripening is the quiet holy hour between. The moment a thing has become itself, fully, but has not yet been given away.

The world needed a month for this. Because everything in the world does it. The wheat does it. The apple does it. The tomato does it. The plum. The corn. The grape. The sunflower. The child in the mother's body in her last long slow week before being born. The idea in the writer's mind in the days before it becomes a book. The love in the woman's chest in the hour before she finally says it out loud.

Everything ripens. And ripening is different from every other thing that happens to a growing thing.

So the Ancients made the month. Each of them gave something to it.

The Sun gave it the heaviest light — the kind that presses down on the fields and the roads and the shoulders of women walking home from the market. Because ripening requires being held, and this heat holds the world like a hand.

The Sky gave it the longest evenings — the ones where the light goes on and on and on, honey-thick, as if the day itself is reluctant to end. Because ripening cannot be rushed, and it needs long hours.

The Earth gave it the first true weight in the fields. The corn tall enough now to hide a child. The wheat golden. The berries heavy. The tomatoes finally red. All the promises of the spring, kept.

The Sea gave it the storms that come at the end of long hot days — the kind that clear the air and make the ripening go faster, the kind that shake the fruit from the branches so it can be gathered.

The Forest gave it the slow deep hum that fills the woods this time of year — the cicadas, the crickets, the low steady thrum that is the whole forest ripening at once.

And the Night gave it the softest gift of all — the first coolness at the edges of the evenings. The small quiet turn in the air, so faint that most creatures miss it, that tells the ripening things: your time is coming. Be ready.

Together they made the month. And they placed at its very first day a small threshold — a turning point that would come every year, unmistakably, whether anyone marked it or not. From that day onward, the year would slowly, quietly, begin its long generous handing-back. The bread. The fruit. The grain. The harvest. Everything the earth had spent the spring and early summer growing, she would now begin to release into the hands of whoever came to receive it.

The elders say the month was made this way on purpose. Not as an ending. As a fullness.

And they say — this is the part they want us to remember — that the month is not only for the fields. The month is for us too.

That every woman has her own quiet fields. Her own long careful growings. Her own promises made in spring and tended through the hot green months. And that this month, whatever she has been growing all year, begins — quietly, without announcing itself — to ripen.

She may not see it yet. She may not have a name for it yet. She may not know what she has been growing at all. But this is the month it begins to turn.

The elders say if you feel a small settling in you at the beginning of August — a strange quiet, a slowing, a sense that something is arriving without your having asked it to arrive — this is the turning they mean. Something in you has grown as far as it can grow. It is not ending. It is ripening. It is becoming ready to be given, or received, or spoken, or laid down.

Do not spend this month mourning that fall is coming. Fall will come. But fall is not now. Now is the fullness itself.

Let the light stay long. Let the heat hold you. Let the fields rise around you. Let whatever you have been growing all year begin, quietly, to turn toward its offering.

You have not been growing for nothing.

Something in you is ripening.

And the month knows it, and the earth knows it, and the elders knew it long before any of us were born.

Welcome to the turning.

Welcome to the fullness.

Welcome to the month that was made, on purpose, for what you have been becoming all year.
