This book rec comes from Madison! 📖 She suggests reading Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson in honor of Juneteenth. This book names and explores America's hidden Caste system and provides personal anecdotes from the author's life as well as historical references, particularly comparing America's systemic racism with other Caste systems in the world.

“Choose not to look, however, at your own peril. The owner of an old house knows that whatever you are ignoring will never go away. Whatever is lurking will fester whether you choose to look or not. Ignorance is no protection from the consequences of inaction. Whatever you are wishing away will gnaw at you until you gather the courage to face what you would rather not see.”

🌈Cornerstone Family Therapy celebrates and welcomes clients from all walks of life🌈

We're halfway through Pride Month and want to remind you that we have many therapists who specialize in supporting LGBTQIA+ clients with a multitude of issues through an affirming and unconditionally, nonjudgmental lens!

According to The Trevor Project’s 2024 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ Young People, 39% of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered attempting su***de in the past year, including roughly half of transgender and nonbinary youth.

It is incredibly important that LGBTQIA+ affirming spaces exist to begin lowering this number. Safe spaces and safe people are protective measures that reduce the likelihood of children and adults taking their own lives.

🌈 You are not alone

☀️SCHOOL'S OUT FOR SUMMER!☀️

Though children tend to love the freedom from structure that summer buys them, their mental health might not.

Clear but flexible structure and expectations:
-Provide limits and boundaries that help children predict how to behave safely and independently
-Reduce anxiety by increasing sense of security and confidence
-Encourages skill building and boredom tolerance
-Outlines time that promotes self entertaining and problem solving
-Encourages curiosity and creativity
-Creates opportunity for connection and bonding
-Ensures that they make the most of each day!

Keep in mind that structure does not mean rigid routine and filling every hour! It is creating a framework that supports seizing the day with intention over doom scrolling and self isolation.

Here are some ways to support kids in adjusting to the sudden change from structured to unstructured days:

💤Today isn't Book Rec Wednesday, but we're coming at you with some very important information from Dr. Matthew Walker's book "Why We Sleep" anyway! 💤

Despite sleep being the most important form of self care we can engage in, many of us chronically neglect it. If more people were educated on the importance of sleep, we might be less likely to do so!

Getting adequate quality and quantity of sleep every night is critically important to your physical and mental health, so do your therapist--and self--a favor and read these slides so you can make an informed choice to get better sleep starting now! 😴

Have you read this book before? And how many hours of sleep do you get per night? 👀

Gentle confrontation time: if you were not watering your a plant adequately, giving it the correct amount of sun, tending to its optimal growing conditions, and allowing it the time to grow, you wouldn't expect it to thrive. So why do you expect it of yourself under poor conditions?

Today's book rec comes from Betty, our founder and fearless leader! 📖 She suggests reading Atlas of the Heart by Brene Brown if you're looking for a book that combines expanding emotional vocabulary with validation of the human experience in a meaningful way.

Betty expands: "I also appreciated that the book normalizes vulnerability while still acknowledging how uncomfortable vulnerability can feel. One section that particularly stayed with me distinguished fitting in from belonging. The idea that fitting in requires changing or editing yourself to be accepted, while belonging requires being fully yourself, really stayed with me. i think so many people spend years trying to fit in without realizing how exhausting and disconnecting that can become."

According to UCLA Health, and many other reputable sources, practicing gratitude can improve mental and physical health.

UCLA Health says "Saying thank you is nothing new. But practicing gratitude — regularly focusing on the positive parts of your life — is about more than having good manners. It can be a powerful health habit."

Research shows that practicing gratitude — 15 minutes a day, five days a week — for at least six weeks can enhance mental wellness and possibly promote a lasting change in perspective. Gratitude and its mental health benefits can also positively affect your physical health.

Here's some ways to get started (it's really easy, we promise!):

⭐Writing it down: Take time either at night or in the morning to write down something that went well. Dedicate a notebook or journal to gratitude so you can reflect and remind yourself of those moments.
⭐Hitting pause: Many of us reflexively say, “thanks” often. Next time you hear yourself say it, stop and pinpoint precisely what you are thankful for.
⭐Redirecting your thoughts: You may feel negative or frustrated during the day. When that happens, step back and shift your focus to a positive aspect of the situation.
⭐Sharing your gratitude: Send a quick note telling someone why you are thankful for them or encourage your family to share something they’re grateful for each night at dinner.

Today Cornerstone Family Therapy acknowledges Memorial Day as a day to embrace both grief and celebration. Remembering and honoring those who lost their lives in the line of duty can be complicated like any other interaction with grief.

You may have a special loved one that you fondly remember today through smiles and tears, or perhaps it's an opportunity to reflect more generally on the fragility of life and those who would bravely sacrifice theirs for others. For many, it becomes a day to connect with family and friends. Regardless of how you observe it, take a moment to consider how special humans truly are and how far many go to prove their love for others.
