Yesterday at our Mom Walk, I found myself just watching these mamas in awe... feeling so proud of them for just showing up.

Because they're all in the THICK of it.

I remember my first go around. I remember feeling paralyzed. Scared. Like getting out of the house with a baby was this HUGE thing.

And I'm watching these mamas thinking...man, they're doing it so well... but it also made me think about how often we do that.

We look at another mom and think:

I wish I could do it like that.

I wish I didn't struggle so much.

She has so much more support than I do.

She makes it look so easy.

But we don't see the silent struggles.

The late-night breakdowns.

The 2am Google searches.

The doubts.

The guilt.

The worry.

The moments of wondering if you're doing any of this right.

Motherhood is hard. Being a parent at every phase is hard.

And two things can be true at the exact same time.

This can be one of the hardest, most exhausting, overwhelming seasons of your life... and also one of the most magical and beautiful.

You don't have to choose one. Life is messy. Motherhood is messy.

And whatever life looks like for you right now...

I see you. You are not alone.

And if you need somewhere to put down some of what you've been carrying, we're here.

☂️ Tuesday’s Mom Walk is looking a little rainy... but we’re still on!

We’re building and growing this little Mom Walk community, so rain or shine, let’s keep showing up. 🤍

☀️ SUN = WALK
If the weather cooperates, meet us at Oak + Bean at 9:15am and we’ll walk together to Hudson Crossing Park!

☔ RAIN = LIBRARY
If it’s raining, we’ll switch things up and meet at the Oswego Public Library for Tuesday Tales at 10am!

I’ll still plan to get there around 9:15/9:30 so the kids can play and the moms can hang out before we head upstairs for story time.

No need to sit this week out just because Mother Nature has other plans. 😂

Sun = walk ☀️
Rain = library ☔
Either way = moms getting out of the house + finding their people. 🤍

Come as you are. See you Tuesday!

So much in the news lately... and as a Perinatal Therapist AND a mama who suffered from Postpartum Anxiety/OCD myself, I want to talk about something that I know can feel really scary:

Intrusive thoughts vs. psychosis.

I specialize in OCD, and one type of OCD I see is Harm OCD. Harm OCD can show up as unwanted, intrusive thoughts or images of harming yourself or someone else.

And they can be SO distressing.

“What if I hurt my baby?”
“What if I lose control?”
“Why did I just picture that?”
“What if having this thought means I actually want to do it?”

The thoughts can feel so intrusive and so real that you start questioning yourself. Thoughts are just thoughts. THOUGHTS ARE JUST THOUGHTS. They can be uncomfortable. They can feel icky. They can scare the crap out of you. But having a thought is not the same thing as having an intention.

One of the things I teach my own kids AND my clients is to think about thoughts like bubbles. You can see the bubble. You can notice it. But you CANNOT grab it and carry it around with you. Eventually, it pops.

With Harm OCD, the thought usually scares you because you don't want it to happen. And I know what some of you are thinking... “But Lindsay Clancy was a good mom...”

I hear you. This case is especially triggering for moms who already struggle with intrusive thoughts. Lindsay Clancy was a mom experiencing significant mental health symptoms, and her mental state and diagnoses have been a major part of the court case. Psychosis and possible bipolar disorder have also been discussed throughout the case.

But this is where understanding the difference between OCD and psychosis is so important.

There is a difference between: “What if I hurt my baby? Why did I think that? I don't want to do that. What if I lose control someday?” and experiencing a loss of reality testing, delusions, hallucinations or beliefs that feel real or true in that moment.

An intrusive image of hurting your baby is not the same thing as wanting to hurt your baby. And having scary thoughts does not automatically mean you are becoming psychotic.

There is a book I am CONSTANTLY lending out to my PPA/OCD mamas called Good Moms Have Scary Thoughts by Karen Kleiman. And honestly, the title says so much.

Good moms can have scary thoughts. If you're reading everything in the news right now and thinking, “Wait... I have thoughts like that. Does this mean I could do something?” — please talk to someone who understands perinatal mental health and OCD instead of sitting alone with that fear.

You are not the only mom who has had a thought that scared her. There is support out there. And if you don't know where to start, message me. Even if DZ Therapy doesn't have an opening, I am ALWAYS willing to help someone find a therapist who is local, in-network, and actually understands what they're experiencing.

You don't have to Google your way through this alone.

This is exactly what I hoped the Mom Walk Series would become

A place to get out of the house, get some fresh air, let the kids be kids, and meet other moms who are right there in the thick of it too.

Next walk:
🌿 Tuesday, September 15 at 9:15 AM
☕ Meet at Oak + Bean in Downtown Oswego
🚶‍♀️ Then we’ll head over to Hudson Crossing Park

Come with your baby, toddler, bigger kid, or come solo. Come as you are. There’s no pressure and you definitely don’t have to know anyone before you come.

I also made us a Mom Walk Facebook group! I wanted everyone to have a place outside of the walks to stay connected, get updates, find the moms you met, and hopefully make some playdate friends along the way.

Join the Mom Walk Series Group here:

Hope to see you next Tuesday!
