Sekhmet’s rage was never weakness.

Her name is commonly translated as “The Powerful One,” and ancient Egyptian tradition knew her as a lioness goddess whose ferocity could defend the divine order as fiercely as it could destroy its enemies.

She was closely associated with Ra and could appear as his terrifying Eye, the force sent against those who threatened ma’at, the order upon which the world depended.

Yet Sekhmet carries a contradiction that makes her far more fascinating than a goddess of destruction alone.

The goddess associated with plague was also called upon against disease.

The bringer of burning heat could become a source of healing.

Her priesthood became closely connected with medicine, and Egyptian texts contain prayers and rituals intended to appease her dangerous power and turn it toward protection.

Sekhmet therefore embodied something ancient Egyptians understood well: the same force capable of destroying life could also defend it.

The lioness does not bare her teeth because she has forgotten tenderness.

She bares them when something precious stands behind her.

That is the power Sekhmet carries.

Not uncontrolled anger.

Protective fire.

The refusal to remain passive when something sacred is threatened.

Sekhmet reminds us that softness and strength were never opposites. Sometimes love has claws.
