Happy Father's day to the dads!
Clients may or may not know... but I probably would not be a massage therapist had my own dad not died when I was 20 years old.
This photo is about 2 weeks before he died. Him"eating" through his feeding tube, my mother massaging his feet, and me, smiling like absolutely nothing is wrong....
My father was Italian and so I come from a family not shy of touch. Growing up, always giving scalp massages and neck rubs to my parents who spent a lot of hours in front of the computer. They deemed me having "magic hands" and would always pout when I would "tease" them with a 15 second session and then wander off.
As my dad lay dying, I learned that touch could do amazing things that the prescriptions and pain patches couldn't. He liked when we would massage his feet and clip his toe nails because he no longer could. I remember being scared I would hurt him if I touched him because he was so thin, but it is quite the opposite.
...Ultimately it was my own struggle with years of grief and its manifestation in my own body that got me here. Because apparently, as I learned first hand, you can only smile and be brave for so long; before what's eating you up inside, actually starts to eat you alive.
But really, what is a dad if not someone who teaches you to be brave? Even as you watch him die.
Massage Therapy was the next step in my healing journey after years of talk therapy, but I will admit that Craniosacral Therapy has made an even bigger impact for me personally in the last few years and is one of the reasons I am so passionate about the work.
The journey never ends, let's go together. 🥰
