This is an excellent article that highlights a hidden struggle that is seen in our clinic on a daily basis. Rothman explores the psychological costs of existing within a culture infatuated with greatness and reconsiders the virtues of the ordinary. At Mend we offer depth psychotherapy that reclaims the ordinary of everyday experiences by giving it nobility, helping our patients move from the performative self, to a self alive to their own life. Outside of being a counselor in training, much of my life lately has centered around caring for young children. I spend many of my days watching my children color, paint, and express themselves through art. At first, I saw it simply as part of their play, but over time I began allowing myself to join them instead of immediately turning toward another task, chore, or responsibility. Sitting beside them and coloring slowed me down in a way that felt restorative rather than unproductive. It gave me permission to step away from the constant pressure to be efficient, organized, or perfect.

Now, after my children go to bed, I often put on music or an audiobook and spend time painting or drawing. What began as a simple activity has become a meaningful form of self-care and emotional grounding for me that I hope to carry forward for many years. Kassidy Roy, Counselor in Training.

One of the ways I remain alive to myself is through play.

I believe play can have an important role in the therapy room. Play lives in the transitional space between real and not real. The space of “as if.” The space where we can experiment with new ways of being. Play allows us to loosen rigidity and to move, even briefly, from certainty and into possibility.

In my daily life, play often begins in fantasy and creative expression. I become a Fairy/Rogue in a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, stepping into adventure, mischief, even rebellion. I gather with other women for a romance book club, entering fictional worlds where love, chosen family, and happiness win out in the end. I arrange flowers for my home, creating beauty simply because beauty matters. I grab a squeaky toy or play tug of war with my dog, laughing because she’s stronger than she looks.

These moments remind me that healing is not only about processing pain. It is also about expanding our capacity for pleasure, imagination, connection, and wonder.

Winnicott’s poignant paradox captures the tension between the desire for protection and the need for connection. By hiding parts of ourselves, we create a shield from potential judgment or rejection, but that can isolate us, leaving us yearning for the connection that comes from being truly seen.

There’s comfort in hiding, but the cost is disconnection. What if the real risk lies in not allowing ourselves to be seen and known?
