As mothers, we know firsthand how truly disorienting, exhausting and isolating the perinatal period can be, a time that begins during pregnancy and can extend through the first year or more after a baby is born.

As clinicians, we know research shows 20% of women experience maternal mental health disorders during pregnancy through one full year after birth, and that 75% of women who experience these conditions remain undiagnosed and untreated.

Behind the statistics are real women and families navigating some of the most impactful and difficult transitions of their lives. Speaking openly about perinatal mental health helps reduce stigma and creates connection. It reminds mothers that they are not alone, and that struggling does not make them a “bad” mother.

If you or someone you love is struggling during pregnancy or after birth, please know that support is available.

You deserve to be heard, supported, and cared for. 🤍

Our therapists have been busy this month attending trainings to continue to best serve our clients!

Katherine Brethower, LCPC, PMH-C attended a training hosted by HRC Mentorship & Community, called “Before There Are Words: Sandtray & The Becoming of a Mother.” Katherine had the opportunity to learn key components of perinatal mental health and explore the concept of Matrescence.

Multiple therapists at Buffalo Roam Therapy Group also attended a training on the Ethics of Safety, put on by Do Good for Erin! During the training, our therapists had the opportunity to create a safety plan of their own and learned about the safety of all; clients, staff, teams, agencies, and communities.

Radical acceptance of the self isn’t about loving every part of you right away. It’s about no longer needing to justify your thoughts, feelings, wants, and needs to everyone, including yourself.

If you carry codependent patterns, this can feel unfamiliar. So much energy goes into explaining, defending, and shrinking.

Radical acceptance interrupts that. It starts small by just noticing what’s true about you, without a verdict attached.

Try writing down 5 things about yourself that are simply neutral. Not good, not bad. Just true. Then notice how shame slowly starts to lose its grip. 🤍
