For those of us (yes, me included) that run fast, go 100 miles per hour, try to get everything at home done, check on friends, work on my business, pay the bills, take the dogs to the vet, get an oil change, try have intentional time with my husband, checking on my adult kids, getting my mental health walk in, consuming 100 grams of protein a day…… all of the things. Doing is exhausting. What if for 30 seconds a few times a day, you could just be? Instead of doing all the time, what if you focused on undoing?

✨ "Happiness lies in trying to better my present self without hating my past self." — Adam Grant

You can look back at old decisions, old versions of you, old mistakes — and feel disappointment, even regret — without turning it into contempt. Without deciding that person was worthless. Without deciding you are worthless because of who you used to be.

Progress doesn't require self-hatred. It requires honesty, plus a little compassion for the person who got you here. 🌱

When we hold grief, there can be self judgment on how long it lasts, how deeply we are feeling it, how we may have it “better than others”. Your grief is your own. Regardless of the situation, it takes time to feel and metabolize, and allow it to move through. Go at your own pace. ❤️

We spend so much energy trying to escape discomfort — numbing it, avoiding it, fixing it as fast as possible.

But growth doesn't happen in the escape. It happens in the staying.

Every time you let yourself feel the awkward conversation instead of dodging it... sit with the uncertainty instead of forcing an answer... stay present with a hard emotion instead of numbing it out... you're expanding your capacity to hold life as it actually is.

Discomfort isn't a sign something's wrong. Sometimes it's a sign you're right at the edge of your growth.

Not seeking pain for its own sake — but building the willingness to stay present when things get uncomfortable, a little at a time. That's the practice. 🌱

The Seasons of Change — Summer Edition is here!

This issue, we're diving into Terry Real's Relational Grid — a simple but eye-opening framework for understanding the patterns we fall into when relationships get stressful, painful, or stuck. Whether you tend to lean into grandiosity, shame, control, or withdrawal, the grid offers a map back to center.

Take a few minutes this week to explore the quiz below and see where your own relational patterns tend to show up. No judgment — just insight. Awareness is always the first step back to connection. 💛

When a child is overwhelmed and a caregiver is there to help settle the nervous system — through a steady voice, a held gaze, a calm presence — the child learns: distress is survivable, and I don't have to face it alone.

But when that co-regulation isn't consistently there, the child doesn't just... stay overwhelmed. They adapt. They find a way to manage the flood on their own:
🔹 Shutting down
🔹 Becoming hyper-independent
🔹 Fawning to keep the peace
🔹 Numbing out
🔹 Staying hyper-alert to everyone else's mood

The work of healing isn't shaming the mechanism. It's understanding it, thanking it for what it protected you from, and slowly — with safety and support — learning that you can regulate differently now.

Our peripheral nervous system is designed for sympathetic (up) and parasympathetic (down) vs being “reset”

Why does your therapist want to know about your family of origin? Why does it matter to the here and now?

Accordingly to Dr. Bruce Perry, Approximately 90% of the brain’s physical structure is formed by age 5. Neuronetworks are formed in relationship, and those connections may be unconscious, like we are on autopilot. Learning about those early childhood experiences can help know where new neuroplasticity - the rewiring of neuroconnections - is needed to help operate from our wise adult self and help change unconscious patterns.

Setting boundaries at work doesn't make you difficult. It makes you sustainable.

Saying "I don't check email after 6pm" or "I'm offline this weekend" felt selfish at first. But when you're clear about your limits, everything gets better. Your focus improves. Your relationships get more honest. And people actually respect you more, not less.

Start small. Say the thing. Hold the line.

You're allowed to. ✨

Ever wonder why you react the way you do in love and conflict? Terry Real’s Relationship Grid shows how patterns of boundaries and self‑esteem shape your relationships—especially under stress.

Your place on this grid shows your typical relational stance—whether you tend to:
💛 People‑please
🔥 Control
❄️ Withdraw
💎 Stay distant

The goal? Move toward the center—the “wise adult” space where healthy boundaries and self-esteem create closeness without losing yourself.

If you are ready to learn your patterns and how they are impacting your relationships, go to seasonsofchangekc.com and schedule a free 15 minute consultation
