ACL rehab is a hot commodity in the sports and rehab world. Most people hear ACL tear and immediately think 9 month rehab. And they wouldn’t be wrong because that is what most professionals will say. For the same reason, people think return to running at 12 weeks.

These numbers have floated around for years and years and tend to guide most clinicians and protocols. The trouble with a post op week number is that it is not an identical snapshot for every individual going through rehab. Some might be excelling and some might still be having pain with a lunge.

We rehab our ACLs based on criteria and objective numbers as benchmarks as opposed to time past surgery. They have to prove to us that they can control specific movements and demonstrate strength requirements needed for walking unassisted, running, jumping, sport, etc.

Estim and hot packs might feel nice temporarily.. but they aren’t doing much for your pain or movement mechanics 😅

Recovery part 3: nutrition 🍗🍎🥑🍌🥗

Another huge part of recovery is nutrition!

Just like sleep, this is an area we find our young athletes lacking. With this much activity, the calories are burning, and we must replenish them (ideally with a big chunk of good stuff). This means way more protein and water than they are probably getting.

As a general rule it is recommended that athletes get 1.2-1.7 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight and half their bodyweight in ounces of water per day (more water if they are sweating a lot or exercising outside in the heat).

The nutrition aspect of recovery is another piece that gets overlooked, but, without it the gains of strength training will not transpire as well.

Our second topic of youth athlete maintenance is recovery!

We know strength training is important, we just had 4 posts on it, but if recovery time is not prioritized, your strength training gains are never going to amount to their full potential.

During rest periods is when the body actually makes the change that we’re trying to get from strength training.

You. Must. Have. Rest. Days.

Not an “easy jog” or an “active recovery workout” but actual rest.

Poor volume management is a major cause of injury and burnout. Your body will eventually force you to rest if you don’t make the time for it!
