ACL rehab is a hot commodity in the sports and rehab world. Most people hear ACL tear and immediately think 9 month rehab. And they wouldn’t be wrong because that is what most professionals will say. For the same reason, people think return to running at 12 weeks.
These numbers have floated around for years and years and tend to guide most clinicians and protocols. The trouble with a post op week number is that it is not an identical snapshot for every individual going through rehab. Some might be excelling and some might still be having pain with a lunge.
We rehab our ACLs based on criteria and objective numbers as benchmarks as opposed to time past surgery. They have to prove to us that they can control specific movements and demonstrate strength requirements needed for walking unassisted, running, jumping, sport, etc.
