For generations, many of us were taught that a “good” child was a child who obeyed quickly, stayed quiet, didn’t question adults, and knew there would be consequences for stepping out of line.
We called that respect, we called it discipline, and because it was so normalized, many of us never stopped to question what those methods were actually teaching.
Fear can absolutely change a child’s behavior in the moment. A child may stop, comply, become quiet, or do exactly what they were told, but stopping a behavior does not necessarily mean they understood why it was wrong, learned what to do differently, or developed the skills they will need to make a better choice next time. Sometimes all they learned was how to avoid the reaction of the adult in front of them.
And that is where I think we need to completely shift our understanding of discipline, because discipline is supposed to teach.
We are trying to raise children who eventually know how to regulate themselves, make thoughtful choices, respect boundaries, take accountability, repair their mistakes, and do the right thing even when we are not standing beside them telling them what to do.
That kind of learning requires connection, clear boundaries, consistency, guidance, accountability, and consequences when they are appropriate, but none of those things require a child to be afraid of their parent.
We can be firm without being frightening, we can hold boundaries without humiliation or intimidation, and we can remain the authority in our homes while still creating relationships where our children feel safe enough to tell us the truth.
Maybe the question we should be asking ourselves isn’t, “How do I make my child obey me?” but rather, “What do I want my child to learn from me in this moment?”
Because the goal isn’t a child who behaves because they are afraid of what you will do if they don’t. The goal is a child who slowly develops the inner skills, values, and confidence to make good choices because you spent their childhood teaching them how. ❤️
That is how we raise children differently, and that is how we change what gets passed down. 🫶🏼
