Some days, the hardest part is knowing where to start.

If you are supporting a child or teen who seems overwhelmed, withdrawn, or not acting like themselves, pause and begin with one simple step. Ask one open question tonight: “What has felt hardest this week?” Then listen without jumping in to fix it.

At Spero, we walk alongside families across southern Minnesota as they sort through next steps and care options. You do not have to map it out alone.

Did you join us and get “On The Move” in May?
Spero challenged our employees to move more in May because we know how important physical activity is for overall health and well-being.

Once again, some of our partner agencies joined us in the challenge and we hit the ground running! Each week, we had anywhere from 185-200 employees from 5 agencies get moving for their physical and mental health. Over the month of May, we had over 50 million steps!

Congratulations to the Mayo Owatonna staff who knocked MN Prairie out of the top spot for our final week with an average of 80,035 steps.

Mayo 80,035
MNPrairie 80,000
SCHA 79,584
Steele County 77,322
OMC 62,397
Spero 51,235

While the May on the Move challenge is done, we encourage everyone to continue to move in whatever way you can for mental and physical well-being.

We know Memorial Day can feel heavy and somber for many.

Today is more than a long weekend—it’s a day of remembrance for the brave men and women who gave their lives in service, and for the families, friends, and communities who continue to carry that loss. 🇺🇸

If today brings grief, reflection, gratitude, or quiet emotions, you are not alone in that.

As we honor those who sacrificed so much, may we also extend compassion to ourselves and to one another. Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do is simply hold space—for memories, for healing, and for connection.

Wishing you a gentle and meaningful Memorial Day. ❤️

What are we doing to equip our children for a life of resilience?

By teaching kids how to manage stress, express emotions, and navigate challenges, we empower them to thrive both now and in the future.

Early coping skills that make a difference:

Healthy Expression: Encouraging open conversations about emotions teaches children to articulate their feelings and seek support when needed.
⬇️
Practical idea: Try role-playing games. Engage in pretend play where children act out different scenarios and express how they might feel, helping them understand various emotional responses.

Emotional Regulation: Learning techniques like deep breathing and journaling helps children manage big feelings and reduce anxiety.
⬇️
Practical idea: Try progressive muscle relaxation. Guide children through tensing and relaxing different muscle groups to help them become aware of physical tension and learn to release it.

By integrating these skills into daily routines through play, discussions, and modeling healthy behaviors, we create a supportive environment where children feel safe and understood.

Let’s work together to nurture the mental health of our youth. Early intervention and consistent support can make all the difference.

At Spero, we understand that mental and physical health are deeply connected. Engaging in regular physical activity isn’t just good for your body; it’s a powerful way to enhance your mental well-being.

Here is a list of why physical activity matters to your mental health:

Mood Enhancement: Exercise releases endorphins, natural mood lifters that can help reduce feelings of anxiety and depression.

Stress Reduction: Physical activity can lower cortisol levels, the body’s primary stress hormone, helping you feel more relaxed.

Improved Sleep: Regular movement contributes to better sleep quality, which is essential for mental health.

Enhanced Self-Esteem: Achieving fitness goals can boost confidence and self-worth.

Simple Ways to Get Moving:
• Take a brisk walk around your neighborhood.
• Join a local dance or yoga class.
• Play a sport or engage in active play with friends or family.

Remember, it’s not about intense workouts; it’s about finding enjoyable activities that keep you moving. Even small steps can lead to significant improvements in mental health.

"On the move" May is a real thing -- both for the Spero team AND you!

Some days it’s just a rough patch. Other days, it feels like something deeper.

If your child’s mood, behavior, or stress level hasn’t improved after a few weeks, or it’s starting to affect school, sleep, or friendships, that can be a sign something deeper may be going on.

In southern Minnesota, many families carry concerns quietly. Paying attention matters. Noting details, like when changes began and how often they happen, can help professionals understand what’s going on and what kinds of support might help.

You’re not alone.

Open conversations about mental health are vital. Talking openly helps break down stigma, fosters understanding, and encourages individuals to seek the support they need.

Pictured is a prompt for starting one of those conversations. This approach is gentle and non-intrusive, offering the other person the space to share without pressure. It emphasizes the importance of mental health and opens the door for a meaningful conversation.

Remember, the goal is to listen actively and provide support, not to solve everything in one conversation. Pay attention, show empathy, and avoid interrupting. Sometimes, just being there to listen is the most supportive thing you can do.
