Juneteenth marks the celebration of June 19th, 1865 when Black people who were enslaved finally were told that they were free, despite The Emancipation Proclamation occurring on January 1, 1863. Per the message of Sankofa- "go back and get it" or "it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind", we look to the past in order to better our future and uplift Black peoples and their voices."
"Juneteenth has never been a celebration of victory or an acceptance of the way things are. Itβs a celebration of progress. Itβs an affirmation that despite the most painful parts of our history, change is possibleβand there is still so much work to do."- Former President Barak Obama
