Dr. Gary J. Williams OD, PC Routine Vision, Children's Vision, Pre and Post OP Care, Full Service Optical (eyewear and contact lenses), and Optometric Vision Therapy Dr. Gary J. Stephen S.

WIlliams has a full service optometric practice at 293 Main street in Owego, NY. This practice was established in 1940 by Dr. Henry E. Quick and has been a fixture in Owego ever since. Dr. Quick was joined in practice first by Sr. Solomon and then by Dr. Gary Williams. As the years past, first Dr. Quick and then Dr. Solomon retired. Now Dr. Williams carries on the tradition. The practice provides

all primary eye and vision needs including routine eye examinations with refraction for eyeglasses and fittings for contact lenses. Additionally, the practice provides examinations for the treatment and management of eye diseases, both on a routine and emergency basis. The practice's most unique feature is the specialty care it provides in the areas of vision therapy and the management of learning-related vision disorders for patients of all ages. Dr. Williams is pleased by all the patients who have chosen his practice to provide their care over the years and also welcomes the opportunity to meet and serve new patients.

When we discuss visual stress and “visual diet” with patients, we explain it in terms of resistance and resilience, as Dr. Mayer does with the microbiome. It is important to increase resistance and resilience while also reducing the load.

As science continues to increase our awareness of the world’s complexity, it is increasingly difficult to determine how much we must know to make informed decisions. When I first read about the com…

“There are 5.5 million cases of skin cancer each year in the United States – more than for all other types of cancer combined. While almost all these cases are minor, it would still be great to drive that incidence as low as possible. Over the years, rates of skin cancer continued to rise despite massive sun-protection efforts.

This book contains information from current research which surprised me. Based on what we have been advised by physicians and heard from the skin care industry for decades, it is likely that you wi…

Researchers know that children who engage in longer conversations more frequently have an easier time learning to read. Questions that add information to an emerging constellation of knowledge help children develop the capacity to think about knowledge other than just use it.

While the statements in this book are based on a well-documented sequence of research over many decades, it is also personal and contains many stories to enhance our appreciation of young children’…

Research has shown that the differences in the use of language in the home greatly affect the ease with which children tackle the monumental challenge of becoming readers. Children who hear and join conversations learn to read more easily when they get to school. The richer those conversations are, in terms of vocabulary, syntax, and information, the more helpful it is.

This book discusses and critiques the transformation of American Kindergarten. Susan Engel, who is a professor of child psychology and child development at Williams College, visited 29 kindergarten…

We need to defend the sensory world and remind ourselves of the crucial importance of the physical body, the integrity of physical space, and the need for people to cultivate inner lives. From these flow things that can’t be made by machines: serendipity, intuition, community, spontaneity, and empathy.

Humans have an amazing history of being able to adapt and survive over time to environmental extremes, many of which were horrific. While this ability is advantageous, it is usually associated with…

Kids don’t usually reach for their phone because it brings joy; they reach because it brings relief. And that shift – from wanting to needing – is the hallmark of a habit loop taking over.

“The average American adult checks their phone 205 times a day – about once every four and a half minutes. In fact, 43% openly admit to being addicted to their phones. If grown-ups with fully…

Digital tools have not performed well in mental health because the operative word in therapeutic relationship isn’t therapeutic. It’s relationship. Decades of research consistently show that the quality of the patient-therapist relationship is the single strongest predictor of success. Similarly, without empathy, learning falters.

Multitasking is one of the worst things we can do for learning. Research suggests that when studying on a screen, the average student lasts less than six minutes before drifting into unrelated digi…

The Strawberry Festival is tomorrow, June 19th! As you can see, these no parking signs are posted along the streets around the office. No parking will take effect at 2pm tomorrow afternoon, so please keep that in mind if you have an appointment with us. Another note is that we will also be closing a bit early, at 4pm, because of all the traffic there will be.

Be safe and enjoy the festivities!

Please Read! If you will be coming to our office at any point this morning parking will be available further down either side of Main Street.
There is an event today for the big steam engine coming to Owego, and the parking on Main is closed right in front of the office unfortunately. It is all supposed to be open after 1, so the afternoon should be normal.
We apologize for the late notice, but we were unaware Main Street would be closed for parking- thank you for understanding!

The data are quite clear on this point: taking notes by hand leads to significantly better learning than typing notes on a computer. Furthermore, this longhand superiority effect more than doubles when students review their notes before an exam.

“Researchers have long known about a phenomenon called the mode effect: the tendency for students to perform worse on computerized tasks than on pen-and-paper ones. This is why many students …
