The Most Important Skincare Habit You Can Give Your Child Starts Now ☀️

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, serious sunburns during childhood (especially blistering burns) significantly increase a person’s lifetime risk of melanoma. The sun protection habits your children develop now will follow them for decades.

Here is what the AAD recommends for kids every single time they go outside:

✅ Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher to all exposed skin 15 minutes before heading out
✅ Reapply every 2 hours and immediately after swimming or toweling off
✅ Cover the ears, back of the neck, tops of the feet, and the scalp part line (the spots parents most often miss)
✅ Use wide-brimmed hats and UV-protective swimwear for extended outdoor time
✅ Keep infants under 6 months completely out of direct sunlight

Protecting your child’s skin today is one of the most meaningful things you can do for their long-term health. Make SPF as automatic as a seatbelt.

Questions about your child’s skin? Our team sees patients of all ages at Owensboro Dermatology.

Myth: People With Dark Skin Don’t Need Sunscreen

While darker skin tones contain more melanin, which provides some natural UV protection, the American Academy of Dermatology is unequivocal: everyone, regardless of skin tone, can develop skin cancer. Melanoma is less common in patients with darker skin, but it is significantly more deadly when it occurs, primarily because of late diagnosis driven by the misconception that darker skin is immune.

Skin cancers in patients with darker skin often appear in areas less commonly examined: the palms, soles, under the nails, and inside the mouth.

Every person deserves a skin check. Every person deserves SPF.

Skin checks are for everyone — book yours today, link in bio.

🎉30 Years. Countless Lives Saved. One Remarkable Human. 🎉

When Dr. Truett joined Owensboro Dermatology, he made a promise to this community and he has kept it every single day. He has spent the last three decades diagnosing, treating, and caring for the people of Owensboro and the tri-state area, and he isn’t done yet.

Outside these walls, he has raised three kids, crossed Ironman finish lines, discovered the feel of the Italian pavement on his face, and -most impressively- stared down cancer and won.

If you ask him what motivates him, he’ll probably mention his patients, our amazing team and staff, his family… and maybe his passion for Claude AI and practicing new languages on Duolingo🤖

Thirty years ago, Owensboro Dermatology got incredibly lucky. We are so proud to call Dr. Truett a founding pillar of this practice and a fixture of this community. ❤️ Here’s to another decade 🍾

🔬Do you know your melanoma ABCDE’s?🔬

Check out these helpful graphics from the American Academy of Dermatology to help you look at any suspicious spots!👀

⭐️A is for Asymmetry: one half does not match the other.
⭐️B is for Border: edges are uneven, scalloped, notched, or blurred rather than smooth and defined.
⭐️C is for Color: multiple shades within a single mole — tan, brown, black, red, white, or blue.
⭐️D is for Diameter: larger than a pencil eraser (about 6mm), though melanomas can be smaller.
⭐️E is for Evolving: any spot that changes in size, shape, color, or begins to bleed or itch.

Save this post and then book the appointment.

Your eye is a start, then we can handle the rest!
