🚶 Safe Transfers Tip: Using a Walker Correctly

A walker is a valuable tool for improving balance and safety — but using it the right way is key. At Steady Strides, we provide education and strategies to help you use your mobility equipment with confidence.

✅ Tips for safe walker use:
• Keep the walker close to your body while moving
• Move the walker first, then step forward into it
• Make sure all walker legs/wheels are stable before stepping
• Avoid leaning too far forward onto the walker

Proper walker technique can help reduce fall risk and support greater independence.

✔️ Squeeze your shoulder blades together
✔️ Hold for 5 seconds
✔️ Repeat 10 times

This exercise helps improve posture, strengthen your upper back, and support better balance. Small movements like these can make a big difference!

We’ve all had moments when we’re in a hurry—but moving too quickly can make it harder for your brain and body to keep up.

When we rush, our attention may shift away from what’s around us, our reaction time can be slower, and we may miss an obstacle or uneven surface. Slowing down gives your brain more time to notice, process, and respond.

At Steady Strides, we encourage taking your time, staying focused, and giving yourself a moment to think about your next step. A little more patience can go a long way toward staying steady and preventing falls.

🛏️ Safe Transfers Tip: Getting In and Out of Bed Safely

Getting in and out of bed is something we do every day — but rushing through the movement can increase fall risk. Steady Strides helps you learn safer ways to move through everyday activities.

✅ Tips for safer bed transfers:
• Sit at the edge of the bed before standing
• Pause and make sure you feel steady before taking steps
• Keep the floor area clear of clutter and obstacles
• Use proper support when needed — avoid grabbing unstable objects

A few extra seconds can make a big difference in staying safe and confident.

At Steady Strides, we know that stronger legs are an important part of staying steady and preventing falls. 💪

Standing Hamstring Curls help strengthen the back of your thighs, improving walking, balance, and everyday mobility.

How to do it:
🔺Hold onto a sturdy chair.
🔺Bend one knee, bringing your heel toward your buttocks.
🔺Lower slowly with control.
🔺Repeat 10–15 reps on each leg.

This simple exercise is part of evidence-based fall prevention programs and can help you build strength and confidence with every step.

Did you know memory can play a role in staying safe on your feet?

Working memory is your brain’s “mental sticky note.” It helps you hold onto information for a short time—like remembering directions, keeping track of where you’re going, or remembering to use a handrail.

When we’re walking, especially in unfamiliar or busy environments, we often rely on working memory to help us pay attention and make safe decisions.

At Steady Strides, we recognize that fall prevention involves more than balance and strength. Memory, attention, and how we process information can also influence how we move through our everyday surroundings.
