Sometimes the best wellness tool is the one you already have with you. We’re talking about your breath. 😌

When life gets busy here in Oxford, it’s easy to move from one thing to the next without ever slowing down. Your body can feel that pace, too.

Taking a few slow, deep breaths can be a simple way to pause and help your body shift out of go, go, go mode. Try this…breathe in slowly through your nose, then breathe out a little longer. Repeat for a few rounds.

Deep breathing isn’t a cure-all, and it won’t replace medical care when you need it. But small stress-supporting habits can be a helpful part of caring for your whole body.

Try taking three slow breaths before your next meeting, meal, workout, or bedtime.

If stress or other symptoms are affecting your daily life, talk with your primary care provider or connect with us at Oxford Holistic Wellness. 💚

If you’re trying to eat better without spending your whole paycheck at the grocery store, start simple.

Think frozen veggies, beans, lentils, eggs, oats, potatoes, rice, seasonal produce, and whatever protein is on sale. You can also save money by planning a few meals before you shop and using leftovers for lunch the next day.

Remember that you don’t have to eat perfectly to support your health.

If you’re feeling tired, sluggish, or like your meals aren’t keeping you full, it may be worth taking a closer look at what your body needs. Nutrition is one piece of the bigger health picture, and small changes can add up over time.

If you have ongoing symptoms or health concerns, talk with your primary care provider or connect with Macey or Kristin at Oxford Holistic Wellness to explore your next steps. 💚

Grocery shopping tip: don’t let the front of the package make the decision for you. 👀

“Natural.” “Healthy.” “Low fat.” “Protein packed.” “Made with whole grains.”

These words can sound great, but they don’t tell you the whole story.

Flip the package over and check the Nutrition Facts label and ingredient list. Look at the serving size, protein, fiber, added sugar, and the ingredients used to make the food.

You don’t need to understand every ingredient or spend two hours reading labels. Start small.

Ask yourself:

👉 What’s actually in this?
👉 Does this have a good source of protein or fiber?
👉 Is there a lot of added sugar?
👉 Is this something I’ll feel good eating regularly?

And remember that there is room for convenience foods, treats, and fun foods. Healthy eating doesn’t have to be perfect.

If you’re trying to make nutrition changes but aren’t sure where to start, talk with your primary care provider or connect with an OHW provider for personalized guidance.

Next grocery trip, turn that package around.

Sometimes the scale changes and you immediately think you’re doing something wrong. But your body is more complicated than calories in, calories out.

Hormones, sleep, stress, nutrition, activity, age, and other factors can all play a role in how your body feels and functions. Changes in hormones can also happen during different stages of life.

That doesn’t mean every weight change is caused by hormones. It simply means there may be more to the story than what you see on the scale.

If you’re noticing changes in your weight along with things like fatigue, changes in your menstrual cycle, sleep changes, mood shifts, or other symptoms, have a conversation with your primary care provider.

At Oxford Holistic Wellness, Macey has training in hormonal health, and the OHW team takes a personalized, whole-person approach to understanding what may be contributing to your symptoms.

You don’t have to blame yourself or jump from diet to diet. Start with curiosity. 💚

Protein is EVERYWHERE right now. High-protein cereal. High-protein snacks. High-protein everything.

But what does protein actually do for your body?

Protein is made of amino acids, which your body uses to build and repair tissues. It also helps support muscles, bones, enzymes, hormones, and many other important functions.

Just because something says “high protein” on the front of a package doesn’t automatically make something a healthy choice.

Turn the package around and look at the Nutrition Facts and ingredient list. How much protein does it actually contain? What else is in the food? Is it something that will keep you satisfied?

Instead of chasing a number, think about adding a good protein source to your meals: eggs at breakfast, chicken, beans or tofu at lunch, fish or lean meat at dinner, or Greek yogurt as a snack.

Your protein needs are personal, too.

If you’re unsure how much protein makes sense for you, talk with your primary care provider or an OHW provider.

That 3 p.m. slump? The “I need something sweet RIGHT NOW” feeling? The energy ups and downs?

Blood sugar may be part of the bigger picture.

When you eat carbohydrates, your body breaks them down into glucose, which your cells can use for energy. Insulin helps move that glucose from your blood into your cells.

The goal isn’t to fear carbs or avoid every food that contains sugar. Your body NEEDS carbohydrates! It’s more about building balanced meals and snacks.

Try pairing carbohydrates with protein, healthy fats, and fiber. For example: an apple with peanut butter, Greek yogurt with berries, or rice with chicken and veggies.

Regular meals, movement, sleep, and stress management can also support healthy blood sugar regulation.

If you notice ongoing energy crashes, unusual hunger, or other changes that concern you, bring them up with your primary care provider.

And if you want to dig deeper, Macey or Kristin here at Oxford Holistic Wellness can help you look at the bigger picture instead of focusing on just one symptom. 💚

Some nights in Oxford, dinner needs to be FAST. Like, “we have practice in 30 minutes” fast. 😂

Eating in a way that supports a healthy inflammatory response doesn’t have to mean complicated recipes or a fridge full of expensive ingredients.

Start with a simple formula:

🥩 Protein: chicken, salmon, eggs, beans, or turkey
🥦 Color: broccoli, peppers, berries, leafy greens, or whatever produce you actually enjoy
🥑 Healthy fats: avocado, olive oil, nuts, or seeds
🍚 Smart carbs: sweet potatoes, rice, oats, or whole grains

A simple bowl can check all the boxes: chicken + roasted veggies + rice + avocado + your favorite seasoning.

We love meals that are nourishing, satisfying, and realistic for your actual life.

If you’re dealing with ongoing symptoms or wondering whether certain foods may be affecting how you feel, talk with your primary care provider or an OHW provider before making major changes.

Back-to-school season in Oxford means busy mornings, packed classrooms, sports practices, homework, and ALL THE GERMS 😅

Instead of waiting until everyone is run down, this is a great time to build simple habits that support your family’s overall health.

Think: regular meals, plenty of water, protein and colorful produce, good sleep, movement, and time to slow down. These basics can go a long way. And don’t forget the gut! Digestive health and overall wellness are closely connected, which is one reason nutrition is an important part of a whole-person approach.

If your child seems to be constantly tired, has ongoing digestive complaints, or just doesn’t seem like themselves, it may be worth talking with their primary care provider.

At Oxford Holistic Wellness, we look at the bigger picture and work with you to understand what may be contributing to ongoing symptoms.

Save this for those busy school mornings, and reach out to Macey or Kristin here at Oxford Holistic Wellness if you’d like support building a wellness plan for your family.

Food labels can feel like a lot so let’s make them simple. Next time you’re at the grocery store, don’t feel like you need to understand every single number on the package.

Start with these 3 things:

1️⃣ Look at the ingredients.
The ingredient list can tell you more than the front of the package. Look for foods you recognize and understand.

2️⃣ Check the serving size.
That “100 calorie” serving might be smaller than you think!

3️⃣ Look for protein + fiber.
These can help make a snack or meal more filling and balanced.

And remember that one food doesn’t make or break your health. You don’t need a perfect diet. You just need small, consistent choices that support your body.

For busy Ole Miss students, try this when grabbing a quick snack. For parents, let the kids help you compare two products at the grocery store. It’s an easy way to build healthy habits together.
