James E. Thornhill Jr.

November 30, 1942 - July 23, 2026

James E. Thornhill Jr.,83, of Eureka, passed away on July 23, 2026. Mr. Thornhill, son of the late James Thornhill Sr. and Lillian nee Hall, was born on November 30, 1942, in Union. He received his education from Washington High School and Ranken Technical College. On June 6, 1964, he was united in marriage to Jill Hynes in Des Moines, Iowa.

He began his career as an engineer, but he was never afraid to take a chance. Believing in building something of his own, he moved his young family to Mississippi to start an insurance agency. Years later, he chased another lifelong dream by opening a Ward's restaurant and bringing the Mississippi favorite to Mobile, Alabama. He loved building that dream with his wife, Jill, and one of his greatest joys was having his two oldest sons, Jim and Todd, working alongside them. Whether it was his career, a new business, or a lifelong dream, Jim believed some opportunities were worth the risk.

Eventually, Jim and his family returned home to Eureka, Missouri, where he once again built his own insurance agency and faithfully served the people in his community until retirement. While he took pride in his work, what mattered most to Jim was always his family.

Some of his happiest years came while watching his youngest son, Ryan, play football at Eureka High School and later at McKendree University. The games were never just about football. Jim and Todd, along with their families, were almost always there, turning Saturdays into cherished family gatherings. Those afternoons in the stands, surrounded by the people he loved most, became some of his favorite memories.

Jim also found joy in life's simple pleasures. Whether he was casting a line in the water, enjoying a good cigar, playing a round of golf, cheering on the St. Louis Blues, or taking his beautifully restored 1966 Fastback Mustang out for a drive on a perfect day, he appreciated every moment. Restoring that Mustang was a labor of love that spanned more than 30 years, and he took great pride in making it just a little better whenever he could. He had a quiet strength, a generous heart, and a willingness to begin again when others might have played it safe. His life was a testament to having the courage to take a chance, work hard, and love his family with all he had.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Among his survivors are his wife, Jill Thornhill of Eureka; three sons, Jim Thornhill and wife Karen of St. Peters, Todd Thornhill and wife Paula of Cottleville, and Ryan Thornhill and wife Amy of Eureka; four siblings, Donna Tanner of Charleston, SC, Lynn Burdick of Moore, OK, Morgie Coleman and husband Mike of Labadie, and Scott Thornhill and wife Peggy of Ballwin; eight grandchildren, Morgan Fruend and husband Ian, Hannah Thornhill, Alexandria Thornhill, Justin Thornhill, Julia Thornhill, Ryan Thornhill II, Brodie Thornhill, and Chase Thornhill; two great-grandchildren, Addison and Olivia Fruend; sister and brother in law, Holly Hynes and husband Jim Zulakis of New Jersey; other relatives, nieces, nephews, cousins.

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm at The Timbers, 1 Coffee Park Lane, Eureka, MO 63025.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Lighthouse for the Blind or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Her compassion extended deep into the community, where she was a pillar of St. Bridget School. For years, she poured her heart into organizing the dinner auction and managing the sports club.
Perhaps her most quiet but profound impact was her commitment to local children; Sallie spent countless hours collecting donations and hand-packing backpacks with school supplies to ensure that every child in Pacific, regardless of their means, could start the school year with dignity.
Beloved Matriarch
Above all her professional and civic achievements, Sallie’s greatest passion was her family. She was the heart of every gathering, and her grandchildren were her absolute world. The love she showered upon them created a bond that will endure long after her passing.
