☀️ DURING A HEAT WAVE: PROTECT YOURSELF. PROTECT OTHERS.

When temperatures soar, small decisions can make a big difference.

✅ Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and a hat.
✅ Stay in the shade and limit strenuous activity.
✅ Drink water regularly, don't wait until you're thirsty.
✅ Keep your home cool by closing blinds, using fans or cool compresses, and staying in the coolest room. Space blankets can also help keep heat out through windows.
✅ Check on older adults, vulnerable neighbors, and anyone working outdoors.

❌ Avoid alcohol, excessive caffeine, and heavy meals.
❌ Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle—even for a minute.

Heat-related illness can develop quickly, but it's largely preventable with the right habits.

Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Stay Sharp and Safe.

☀️ BEFORE THE HEAT WAVE: PREPARE WHILE IT'S STILL COOL

Extreme heat is one of the deadliest weather hazards, but it's also one of the most predictable.

A few minutes of preparation today can make a big difference when temperatures rise.

Before the next heat wave:
✅ Check weather alerts.
✅ Plan outdoor activities around the heat.
✅ Identify cool places nearby (libraries, malls, community centers).
✅ Stock extra drinking water for your family, pets, and vulnerable neighbors.
✅ Learn to recognize the signs of heat-related illness before someone needs help.

Preparation is about making simple decisions before they become urgent.

Wildfire smoke can affect your health long before flames are anywhere near your home.

Even when the sky looks clear, smoke particles can irritate your eyes and lungs, worsen existing health conditions, and pose a greater risk to children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with heart or respiratory diseases.
One of the best ways to protect yourself is to monitor the Air Quality Index (AQI) and adjust your activities accordingly.

Awareness is preparedness. A quick check today can help you make safer decisions for yourself and your family.

The danger doesn't end when the flames are gone.

After a wildfire, hidden embers, unstable debris, hot ash, and poor air quality can still pose serious risks.
Before returning home, wait for official clearance. Then take your time, wear appropriate protective equipment, and stay alert for hazards that may not be immediately visible.

Recovery is not a race.
A few extra precautions today can prevent injuries tomorrow.

When a wildfire threatens your area, hesitation can be dangerous.

If authorities order an evacuation, or if you feel unsafe, leave early. Waiting until the last minute can put you, your family, and first responders at greater risk.
If you evacuate, wear protective clothing, keep your vehicle closed to smoke, and follow official evacuation routes.
If you must shelter in place, secure your home, stay indoors, and monitor emergency information closely.

In a wildfire, preparation gives you options. Calm action helps you use them.

The best time to prepare for a wildfire is before there is smoke on the horizon.

A few simple actions, creating defensible space around your home, planning evacuation routes, preparing emergency supplies, and signing up for local alerts, can make a significant difference when every minute counts.

Preparedness is about reducing uncertainty, protecting what matters most, and giving yourself more options when an emergency occurs.
The more you prepare today, the less you have to improvise tomorrow.
