The body part of Summer is our tongue 👅, therefore this season and element nourishes our ability to SPEAK OUR TRUTH. To hear the direction of our HEART ❤️ And share it where it is welcome. Based in traditional Chinese medicine's five element theory.

Summer is the home of verbal communications.

Fire's function involves separating the "pure" from the "impure".

As the fire burns away the unnecessary, the mind is left with the pure, discerning wisdom to separate life’s treasures from its burdens.

In this fire element season of summer, I invite you to feel the heat, and remember the cool. refine. And without burden, speak your truth, in kindness and with refined wisdom.

For when the heart is in harmony, speech flows with warmth and laughter, connecting souls through shared joy.

We are currently in the season of Summer. ❤️
In TCM's 5 Element theory, Summer has the element of Fire 🔥

One of the traditional Chinese medicine classics “The yellow emperor's classic of internal medicine” Qibo the official, advised adapting to the seasons.

He emphasized living in harmony with natural rhythms, moderation, and regular routines to maintain the unity of body and spirit. He noted that curing illness once it has started is like starting to dig a well only when one is already thirsty.

To harmonize with this season, and beat the summer heat. It's recommended to...

Adjust Sleep: Go to bed slightly later and wake up earlier to match the long days, but make sure to take a brief rest or nap at midday to protect your Heart energy.

Eat Cooling Foods: Consume foods with high water and cooling properties to counteract external heat, such as watermelon, cucumber, mint, mung beans, and leafy greens.

Protect Digestion: In TCM, even though summer is hot, the digestive organs can become "cold." Avoid eating overly iced drinks or heavy, greasy foods, which can cause internal stagnation or diarrhea.

Regulate Activity: Exercise in the cooler hours of the early morning or evening. Because summer is a yang season, excessive, strenuous activity in peak heat can rapidly deplete your Qi (energy) and Yin (body fluids).

Nurture Joy: The Heart houses the Shen (spirit). It is a time for laughter, socializing, and lightheartedness, but avoid letting summer excitement turn into stress or anxiety.

The ancient texts teach that to stay healthy in summer, you should cultivate this energy by waking earlier, staying active, and embracing joy.

Five element cycles, part 2

Another way we witness a 5 elements cycle in ourselves is the "24hr Qi cycle." (Qi is the word for energy in this theory. Also spelled chi, or ki, depending on it's origin.) It maps the flow of vital energy through the body’s 12 primary meridians.

Every organ in the 5 element theory, has a two-hour window when its energy peaks. Practitioners use this cycle to time treatments, understand physical health, and analyze emotional imbalances.

11:00 PM – 1:00 AM (Gallbladder💚):
The body’s energy begins to turn inward.
The gallbladder rules decision-making and physical rejuvenation. Waking up during this time is linked to frustration or gallbladder imbalance.

1:00 AM – 3:00 AM (Liver💚):
Your liver is at peak function, detoxifying blood and processing emotions. Waking during this window is associated with liver disharmony or anger.

3:00 AM – 5:00 AM (Lungs🤍):
Energy circulates through the lungs, oxygenating the body. It is a time for deep rest, and waking now can relate to grief or sadness.

5:00 AM – 7:00 AM (Large Intestine🤍):
Best time to wake up, drink warm water, and move your bowels to clear out toxins.

7:00 AM – 9:00 AM (Stomach💛):
Digestion is at its strongest, making this the ideal window for your largest meal of the day.

9:00 AM – 11:00 AM (Spleen💛):
The spleen transforms food into energy and nutrients. It is the best time for mental work or physical activity.

11:00 AM – 1:00 PM (Heart ❤️):
The heart pumps energy and spirit outward. It is a good time for a light lunch and a brief, peaceful rest.

1:00 PM – 3:00 PM (Small Intestine❤️):
Food digestion and assimilation continue. This is when the body processes and organizes thoughts or experiences from the day.

3:00 PM – 5:00 PM (Urinary Bladder💙):
Energy peaks here, often providing a "second wind" for physical tasks or studying. It is great for hydration.

5:00 PM – 7:00 PM (Kidneys💙):
Kidney energy is active, supporting the storage of vital energy. This is a recommended time for a light dinner and gentle stretching.

7:00 PM – 9:00 PM (Pericardium❤️):
Focuses on circulation and protecting the heart. The mind should be calming down for the night.

9:00 PM – 11:00 PM (Triple Warmer / San Jiao❤️):
Governs the endocrine system and temperature regulation. The body harmonizes energy in preparation for deep sleep.

And then it repeats.

If you experience consistent symptoms, pain, or waking at a specific time, it indicates the corresponding organ is overworked, blocked, or out of balance. This may also be noticed in the meridian pathways in the torso, head, and limbs, in the form of painful or fatigued muscles, and joints, etc.

The 5 element cycles, part 1.

The five elements are:
💚Wood, ❤️Fire, 💛 Earth, 🤍Metal, and 💙Water.
Their corresponding attributes, and seasons, flow in a circle like the yearly seasons,
💚Spring, ❤️Summer, 💛Later Summer, 🤍Fall, and 💙Winter.
But the flow doesn't stop there, it repeats over and over again.

We can witness this flow easily in nature: in the changing of seasons, hours in a day, the way our bodies respond to each season of the year, and in our life stages.

Like the seasons in a year, we can witness the 5 elements connection to the human life cycle, like this:

1. 💙 Winter / Water:
Winter; Yin energy; gathering, potential, and stillness. It represents the foundational instinct and vitality we are born with.

Developmental Stage: The conception, embryonic stage and early infancy.

2. 💚 Spring / Wood:
Spring, upward and outward expansion. Driven by the raw, surging energy of spring, this is the time we push through obstacles, assert our independence, and learn to navigate the world. It is a period of rapid physical and creative development.

Developmental Stage: Early childhood, youth and growth.

3. ❤️Fire:
Summer; maximum Yang energy; flourishing, expanding, and connection. It's defined by youthful exuberance, passion, and the discovery of identity. This is the phase of life where social connections, emotional expression, and finding your place in the world peak.

Developmental Stage: Puberty, adolescence, and young adulthood.

4. 💛 Late Summer / Earth:
Late Summer; neutral, stabilizing, and centering energy.
Earth provides the grounding, nurturing, and stability needed to harvest the fruits of our labor. It is characterized by caretaking, digesting life experiences, and balancing material and emotional wealth.

Developmental Stage: Adulthood, Middle Age, Maturation, career-building, and parenting.

5. 🤍FAll / Metal:
Energy Dynamics: Autumn; descending energy; yielding and releasing.
Metal is the season of the harvest. It represents
a shift from outward accumulation to inward reflection and letting go. It is a time for distilling wisdom, evaluating what is truly beneficial, and preparing for the final transition.

Developmental Stage: Late Adulthood, and the Senior years, "Autumn" of life.

The Return to Winter / 💙 Water:
Developmental Stage: The Transition of Death and Rebirth. The Return to Winter and the deep, mysterious ocean.

This internal and external awareness and connection to seasons is part of the considerations used when using TCM to address wellness.

What season of the year do you feel most connected to?

"The 5 Element theory"

The 5 elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.

The elements also are each related to different seasons and attributes.

The 5 seasons are Spring, Summer, Late summer, Fall, and Winter.

They flow in order, and are connected to the world around us, and in us.

This theory is part of a story. A practice. A way of existing. It describes things witnessed by the ancient Chinese and written about in the classics, one of which “The yellow emperor's classic of internal medicine” tells how The Yellow Emperor asks his official Qibo why modern people (The majority of this text was compiled between 475–221 BC. Just for reference.) age faster? To which his official replies that the ancients followed the "ao" (the natural flow of nature itself.) whereas contemporary people exhaust their vital energy through lack of moderation and ignoring natural rhythms.

As a "contemporary" myself ...as opposed to an ancient, I see this too. And I'm working on returning to a simpler life for more vitality as well.

I have enjoyed learning and applying useful principles from this theory to my own life.

The 5 element theory is a vast cycle of knowledge, useful for understanding the connection between your well-being, the world around us, and the meridian pathways in us all.

Stay tuned for more on the meridian pathways.
