The Puna Community Medical Campus will be shaped by the land, culture, and people around it—a safe place to grow, a place to heal, and a place built for Puna.

Our community deserves access to quality, compassionate care closer to home, and we’re working hard to make this vision a reality. Please help us spread the word!

Imagine a warm, peaceful place for our wāhine hāpai to give birth, with hospital care just steps away if needed.

A standalone birthing center in the future Puna Community Medical Campus could offer families the best of both worlds: a comfortable, personal birth experience with the reassurance of emergency care nearby.

What would you hope to see in a birthing center for Puna families?

Hawaiʻi’s healthcare shortage is not just about finding workers, it’s about helping them stay.

According to the University of Hawaiʻi’s 2025 Physician Workforce Report, housing help is one of the top ways to support and retain healthcare workers. The report also found that more than 88 physicians moved away from Hawaiʻi in 2025.

That’s why the Puna Community Medical Campus plans to include workforce housing. By making it easier for our staff to afford living here, we can build a stable healthcare team that stays, grows roots, and forms lasting relationships with the patients and families they serve.

Workforce housing is an investment in both our healthcare workers and the long-term health of Puna.

Did you know?

The future Puna Community Medical Campus will bring many kinds of care together in one place. Along with a 25-bed hospital offering emergency services, radiology, and surgery, the campus will include a women’s health and birthing center, a dental clinic, workforce housing, a Hawaiian Healing Center, and Kīpuka Garden—a Hawaiian medicinal and healing garden.

The nearly 15-acre campus, located just north of Pāhoa town, will also include a large solar array. Income from excess solar production will help support PCMCF’s mission of making sure the people of Puna can receive high-quality, culturally responsive care, regardless of their ability to pay.

This project is about caring for our ʻohana, strengthening our community, and creating a healthier future for Puna.

Which part of the project are you most excited about? What would you like us to keep in mind as we work to make sure the final plans truly reflect the needs of our community?

Puna Community Medical Center Foundation is proud to welcome Soul Harris as the new Project Manager for the future Puna Community Medical Campus.

A proud Pāhoa resident, Soul cares deeply about the health and well-being of East Hawaiʻi. With a background in civil engineering, she is passionate about building resilient, sustainable communities and helping bring a long-awaited medical center to life for Puna families.

We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to Steve Sparks for his hard work, dedication, and leadership on this project. We are especially thankful for the time and care he has devoted to ensuring a thorough and seamless transition as Soul steps into this important role.

Soul has already been busy sharing the progress we have made, educating the public about the work still ahead, and connecting with community members throughout Puna.

To learn more about the Puna Community Medical Campus—planned for the north end of Pāhoa, just off Highway 130—visit pcmcf.org or stop by our booth at one of our upcoming community events.
