While we admire the dedication of Bears fans braving the cold in the stadium, prolonged exposure to low temperatures can trigger a variety of cold-induced foot conditions that we have seen at The Foot and Ankle Studio.

Midwest temperatures have dropped significantly, demonstrating a bitter winter. We have treated several problems associated with the frosty weather. Typically, cold temperatures cause constriction or narrowing of blood vessels, which can lead to the following problems.

1. Chilblains (Small bumps on the toes).

🔴 Red or purple patches on the tips of the toes.

🔥 itching and burning that is unexplained.

🦶🏼 small source typically at the end of the digits.

2. Raynaud’s Phenomenon (White or blue toes)

🩸 Cold triggers poor blood flow to the toes, and symptoms such as the above can occur.

3. Frostbite

🥶 Freezing of skin and underlying tissues on toes, fingers, noses, or ears is very common. It is often painful and shows up with blistering or loss of skin tissue.
