A Hospital birth does not mean you have to do everything their way. Positions, pain relief techniques and advocacy is YOUR RIGHT!!
Know what is available where you are birthing. (Do a tour, ask questions)
Have your birth plan available and given to your Dr., staff, your support village and KEEP A COPY IN YOUR BAG.

If you’re in NYC and expecting, PLEASEEEEE take advantage of this wonderful opportunity!!!!! Seriously!!!

Black women are 4–5 times more likely to die during childbirth or shortly after, and the sad part is that in many cases, those deaths were PREVENTABLE.

This is where having somebody in your corner can really matter. Somebody who knows what questions to ask, knows when something isn't sitting right, and isn’t afraid to speak up when you’re sitting there like, “Ummm… excuse me?!?”

And NO, this post is NOT meant to scare you. It’s meant to INFORM you!

I’m NOT saying don't birth in a hospital. I’m NOT saying doctors are bad. I’m saying KNOW YOUR OPTIONS AND KNOW YOUR RIGHTS... know what's has been and is happening.

And PLEASE understand this: hospital protocol is NOT law! Just because somebody says, “That’s our policy,” doesn’t automatically mean you have to say, “Okay, whatever you say!”

ASK QUESTIONS.
Don’t let being brushed off be the end of the conversation.
Get a second opinion.
Get a THIRD opinion if you need one!

And if something doesn’t feel right to you, SAY SOMETHING!!!

You are not “being difficult.”
You are not “asking too many questions.”
You are not “doing the most.”

You are having a BABY and you deserve to understand what is happening to YOUR body.

And remember ladies…

NO is a full sentence.

Use it. Practice it. Put it in your vocabulary. Hell, put it on a T-shirt!
