How Prepping for the Week Helps Shift Your Focus
It's hard enough dealing with your ADHD symptoms but now somehow Sunday has sneaked-up on you and you are TOTALLY UNREADY for the week. Here are a few tried and true ideas that I have used in my practice that can really help:
"Taking a few minutes": Send a few minutes getting ready for the coming week by making a few simple changes that will help build a routine:
Place a single basket or tray in your kitchen or near your front door: Put your keys, wallet, badge, sunglasses and anything else you know you will need for the upcoming week. It works because it is simple and helps eliminate that frantic, time-wasting search for belongings - especially on a Monday morning!
Prepare a couple of meals for the upcoming week: Nothing fancy, the goal is to prepare a few easy, healthy meals that you can grab from the fridge on your way out. It works because it will only take a few minutes on a Sunday afternoon to cut up a few veggies and maybe make a yogurt cup with some fresh fruit. And it avoids the "analysis paralysis" of trying to make a decision when you are late for work and hungry!
Pick out two complete outfits for the week: I use this one myself, especially with my youngest child. Set out a complete outfit - including underwear, socks, shoes and belt. Hang them together at the front of your closet. The reason why this works is pretty obvious. It avoids the morning time crunch which drains your executive function.
Embracing the "New You": I call my therapy practice "Reinventing U Therapy" because it's my professional goal to help you shed the shame of past failures and recognize your inherent ability to transform yourself and improve yours self-image. Prepping, especially when you are dealing with ADHD symptoms, not only saves time - it also fundamentally helps you rewire brain. When you build systems that work with your brain instead of against it, you stop identifying as "scattered" and "hopeless" and start seeing yourself as capable. And that's how you Reinvent U!
