Sensory Innovation Therapies

Sensory Innovation Therapies Providing pediatric occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, and special education tutoring in St. Lucie, Martin, & Palm Beach Counties.

My name is Leah Dunleavy, M.A., BCBA, OTR/L, OTD and I am an occupational therapist specialized in working with children, adolescents, and young adults with sensory processing difficulties. In addition to being an occupational therapist, I am also a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and use my knowledge in behavior analysis to better understand how the surrounding events, environments, and p

erformance impact participation and independence in everyday activities. My goal is to address the challenges that are impacting participation and independence through using a child and family’s strengths. By incorporating the family into treatment, caregivers learn how to best set up their child’s lives for everyday success. Sessions occur in the home or school environments to address challenges in the naturalistic environments.

👀 Did you know? Your child's eyes need to move smoothly and accurately to support reading, writing, and everyday learning!

In this activity, the child is working on ocular motor skills by following a target with their eyes while keeping their head still. 👁️➡️👁️

Strong visual tracking skills help children:
📚 Follow words while reading
✏️ Copy from a page or board
⚽ Track moving objects during play
🎯 Improve hand-eye coordination

When eye-tracking skills are challenging, children may lose their place while reading, skip words, or have difficulty visually following objects.

Through fun and engaging activities, Occupational Therapy can help strengthen these important visual skills! ✨

🟦🟩🟨🟥 Have you heard of the Zones of Regulation?

The Zones of Regulation help children identify their emotions, understand how their bodies feel, and learn strategies to manage their feelings.

One important thing to remember: there is no "bad" zone. Everyone experiences all of the zones throughout the day!

💙 Blue Zone: Feeling tired, sad, sick, or low energy
💚 Green Zone: Feeling calm, focused, happy, and ready to learn
💛 Yellow Zone: Feeling worried, excited, frustrated, or silly
❤️ Red Zone: Feeling angry, overwhelmed, terrified, or out of control

The goal isn't to stay in the Green Zone all the time. The goal is to recognize our feelings and use tools to help us respond appropriately.

As parents and caregivers, we can support children by helping them name their emotions, validating their feelings, and practicing coping strategies together.

✨ All feelings are okay. It's what we do with them that matters.

What are some calming tools that help your child regulate their emotions?

How Can You Tell if Your Child May Be Having Difficulty With Self-Regulation? 👀

Self-regulation challenges can show up in many different ways throughout a child’s day. Some children may:

⚡ Act impulsively or have trouble keeping their hands to themselves
🎭 Become overly silly, hyperactive, or appear “out of control”
😣 Have frequent meltdowns or big emotional reactions
🔄 Struggle when transitioning from one activity to another
⏳ Have difficulty waiting, taking turns, or staying in line

Self-regulation is a skill that develops over time and may look different for every child ❤️

Ways to support self-regulation may include:
✨ Creating predictable routines
✨ Providing movement or sensory breaks
✨ Using visual schedules or transition warnings
✨ Modeling calm regulation strategies
✨ Practicing skills through play and daily routines

Mealtimes involve more than just eating 🍎👄
Children use many oral motor skills to safely chew, move, and swallow food. When these skills are difficult, eating can become frustrating or overwhelming for both the child and family.

Some signs of oral motor difficulties may include gagging easily, trouble chewing, pocketing food, drooling, or avoiding certain textures.

With the right support, children can build confidence and improve feeding skills through play-based and supportive therapy 💛

If your child is always jumping, crashing, or climbing… they may be sensory seeking 👀

Craving proprioceptive input (through muscles and joints) to feel more organized and in control.

What looks like “dangerous” behavior is often meeting a sensory need!

Instead of stopping it → offer safe ways to move 💛
