Your child isn't "refusing" to write nicely, and they aren't just being lazy. Their brain is actively fighting their own hand. 🧠

When a child struggles with heavy pencil pressure, messy handwriting, or a white-knuckled grip, we have to look at the roots. Specifically, the Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex (ATNR) and the Palmar reflex.

When the ATNR reflex hasn’t been fully integrated into the nervous system, extending the arm naturally forces the fingers to open. To fight this involuntary reflex and hold the pencil, the child has to use massive conscious effort just to grip it. No wonder their hand hurts after two sentences!

💡 The Home Takeaway: Standard handwriting worksheets won't fix a primitive reflex. We need to integrate the reflex first through specific movement patterns. Try having your child do animal crawls (like bear crawls or crab walks) before homework to help integrate these foundations!

When I started out as an OT back in the 90s, the “advanced” tools we had were balance beams and therapy putty. 🪵💪

Traditional therapy models often just demand more and more repetitions from a brain that is struggling to see the path.

We take a roots-up approach. Before we ask for higher-level cognitive or motor tasks, we use Photobiomodulation (PBM)—targeted red and near-infrared light, to quite literally "turn the lights on." 🚀✨

It might look like just fun and games, but turning upside down is pure brain magic! 🧠

When we invert a child over a therapy ball, we are firing up the vestibular system—the brain’s internal GPS. Inversion gives deep sensory input, calms an overactive nervous system, and helps reset primitive reflexes that might be blocking higher-level motor and cognitive skills.

Before we can ask a child to sit still, hold a pencil, or focus at school, we have to build the neurodevelopmental house from the ground up.
