Tried Everything — But It Keeps Coming Back?

One of the most common things I hear from patients is:

“I've already tried treatment. It helped for a while, but the problem came back.”

That doesn't necessarily mean nothing can be done.

Sometimes it means it's time to look at the problem differently.

Here are 5 signs you may need a different approach:

You improve temporarily, but the problem keeps returning.
Treatment has focused mainly on where it hurts.
You're still not sure WHY the problem keeps happening.
Your progress has stalled, but the treatment hasn't changed.
You're starting to think you'll simply have to live with it.

When I evaluate a stubborn problem, I'm not just asking, “Where does it hurt?”

I'm also asking:

What isn't moving correctly?
What is being overloaded?
What has been missed?
And what conservative options haven't been tried yet?

Sometimes a fresh evaluation can give you a completely different direction.

Feeling better is good. But it isn't always the same as being fixed.

One of the biggest mistakes people make with stubborn back, neck, joint, or disc problems is assuming:

“My pain is better, so the problem must be gone.”

Sometimes that's true.

But symptoms can improve before the underlying problem has fully settled down.

That's why I look at more than just your pain level.

I want to know:

• Are you moving better?
• Can you do more than you could before?
• Are certain movements still aggravating it?
• Is the problem happening less frequently?
• Is your body responding to what we're doing?

The goal isn't simply to chase pain.

The goal is to figure out whether we're making meaningful progress with the problem.

That's especially important for people who have been dealing with the same issue for months or have already tried several things without lasting improvement.

I'm Dr. Scott Stiffey at Pro Active Chiropractic Center in Palmyra.

Have you ever said:

“I thought this was better. Why is it back again?”

That’s something I hear frequently with stubborn back, neck, shoulder, hip, knee and other musculoskeletal problems.

Sometimes the location where you FEEL the problem isn’t the entire problem.

You might get some temporary relief, but if something continues to overload or irritate the area, the symptoms can eventually return.

That’s why I like to look at questions such as:

• What isn't moving the way it should?
• Is another area compensating?
• Is there an old injury involved?
• What activities repeatedly aggravate it?
• What treatments have already been tried?
• What helped—and what didn't?

Sometimes the next step isn't simply doing more of the same thing.

It’s figuring out why the problem keeps returning in the first place.

That’s a big part of what I mean when I talk about helping people with stubborn muscle, joint and spine problems.

**“Why does this keep coming back?”**

That may be one of the most common questions I hear in the office.

Sometimes people have already tried:

• Chiropractic
• Physical therapy
• Medication
• Injections
• Massage
• Exercises
• Rest

They may even feel better for a while…only to have the same problem return again.

When that happens, my first question is:

What are we missing?

After more than 25 years in practice, I’ve developed a real interest in the stubborn muscle, joint, back, and neck problems that haven’t responded the way someone hoped.

That’s a big part of why many patients started calling me “The Fixer.”

It doesn’t mean I can fix everything.

It means I enjoy digging a little deeper, looking at the problem from different angles, and trying to determine whether there may be another conservative approach worth considering.

If you keep dealing with the same problem over and over again, maybe it’s time to take another look.

🏈 Do You Have “Bleacher Back”?

Football season is here, and that means a lot of us will be spending Friday nights, Saturdays, and weekends sitting on hard bleachers.

The problem?

After an hour or two, you stand up and your back suddenly feels stiff, tight, or uncomfortable.

Bleachers usually provide very little back support, and most of us gradually start slouching, leaning forward, twisting, or staying in the same position for too long.

A few simple things may help:

✅ Bring a stadium seat with back support
✅ Change positions regularly
✅ Stand and walk during breaks
✅ Get up at halftime
✅ Keep your feet supported when possible
✅ Take bulky wallets or objects out of your back pocket
✅ Walk for a few minutes before getting back in the car

If your back repeatedly bothers you long after the game is over, the bleachers may simply be exposing a problem that was already there.

At Pro Active Chiropractic Center in Palmyra, we help people throughout Northeast Missouri stay active, mobile, and able to enjoy the things that matter to them.

🏈 Enjoy the game. Don’t let the bleachers ruin the rest of your weekend.

Have you ever felt exhausted throughout the day but strangely alert when it is finally time to sleep?

You may not be lazy.

Your body may simply be spending too much time in stress mode.

When stress continues without enough recovery, people often notice signs such as:

Tight shoulders or neck tension
Jaw clenching
Shallow breathing
Poor sleep
Low energy
Headaches
Difficulty relaxing
Feeling overwhelmed by small problems

Even when you sit down, your body may still feel like it is “on.”

That is why recovery is not always the same as doing nothing.

Real recovery may include movement, better sleep habits, slower breathing, time outdoors, less screen time, chiropractic care, acupuncture, or other healthy routines that help your body reduce tension and regain balance.

The goal is not to remove every stressful situation from your life.

The goal is to help your body become better at moving out of a constant state of pressure.

Sometimes you do not need more motivation.

You need to give your body a better chance to recover.

When life gets busy, health is usually the first thing people cancel.

The workout gets skipped.

The appointment gets moved.

Sleep gets shortened.

Healthy habits are pushed aside.

But the more life demands from you, the more you need your body functioning well.

Protecting your health does not require a perfect routine.

It may mean:

Keeping your scheduled appointment
Taking a short walk
Stretching between tasks
Choosing a healthier meal
Drinking more water
Going to bed a little earlier

Your health is not taking time away from your life.

It is helping you live it.

Protect the habits that help you handle everything else.

When life gets busy, health is often the first thing people cancel.

The workout gets skipped.

The appointment gets postponed.

Sleep gets shortened.

Healthy meals become whatever is quickest.

But demanding seasons are not when your health matters less.

They are when your health matters more.

You need energy to keep going. You need mobility to move comfortably. You need rest to recover. You need a body and nervous system that can adapt to the stress being placed on them.

Taking care of your health does not mean ignoring your responsibilities.

It helps you meet those responsibilities with more strength and resilience.

Keep the appointment.

Take the walk.

Protect your sleep.

Make one healthy choice today.

Your health supports everything else on your calendar.
