By leveraging technology, medical care, and therapeutic services, families can empower their young children with hearing loss to speak and thrive in the hearing world. What we do: Of families with children with hearing loss, nearly 40% are not aware of the medical, audiologic and intervention services available to them. Ideally, a child is reached between birth and age three, a crucial time when t
he potential for learning is greatest. Why we do it: In the United States, one in 300 babies is born with permanent hearing loss, which occurs in newborns more frequently than any other health condition. Yet with current medical advancements, the potential for these children to be taught to listen and speak is enormous. The goal of the Baker Institute is to see that every child has this opportunity. How you can help: The largest need of the Baker Institute is to raise the funds to sustain and expand programs. Given the prevalence of hearing loss in newborns, the need is ongoing; given that intervention should occur by age three to optimize chances for success, the need is urgent.
