A costume should add to the fun, not get in the way of the chair. Here is why each safety tip matters:
Keep fabric and decorations away from the wheels. Loose material can catch in the wheels or push rims, which can stop the chair suddenly or pull the person off balance.
Keep brakes, controls and armrests reachable. Being able to stop, steer and push up from the armrests is what keeps the person in charge of their own chair, so nothing should cover them.
Use lightweight materials. Heavy or tall add-ons shift the chair’s weight, which makes it easier to tip over curbs, ramps or doorways.
Add reflective tape or LED lights. After dark, a costume can hide the chair’s usual shape. Lights help drivers and other trick-or-treaters see the person.
Test it indoors first. Rolling through a doorway, reaching the brakes and sitting for a while will show any problem before the night begins, when it’s easy to fix.
Plan it together, pick the character and build it with the chair in mind.
