On Friday, Dr Hoang implanted the 500th Watchman device at Ascension Bay. The Watchman, a device used in patients with AFib who can not tolerate blood thinners, helps to reduce the risk of stroke which is 5x greater in AFib patients. It works by sealing off an area of the heart where most blood clots form when the heart is in AFib, so that the patient can go off the blood thinner. We now have 5 physicians offering the Watchman procedure in our region, all at Cardiovascular Institute — Dr Haghighat, Dr Hoang, Dr Khaja, Dr Patel, and now, Dr Ferraro. Today on Medical Monday, Dr Patel gave an update from Cardiovascular Surgical Institute. We’re gradually adding more specialized procedures. Over the past month we’ve added vascular procedures to open blockages in the legs using a variety of techniques.

The Cardiovascular Institute of Northwest Florida has expanded its ambulatory surgery center, offering heart and vascular procedures that allow patients to be treated and return home the same day.

We are pleased to welcome Dr Bruce Ferraro, Cardiac Electrophysiologist, to Cardiovascular Institute! He will be seeing his first patients with us this week! He recently completed his electrophysiology fellowship at Brown University Health in Rhode Island, however he is very familiar with the Florida Panhandle after attending Florida State for his Bachelors and Medical Degrees. We’re excited to have him on board!

Our Echo & Vascular Ultrasound Team has been growing! We have more ultrasound exam rooms, more techs and more capacity with the same nationally accredited excellence. In addition to our Imaging Center by our main office, we also offer echoes and vascular ultrasound studies at our Beach location. Referrals from community providers are welcomed!

This spring the guidelines on cholesterol were updated to include having cholesterol lab work at a younger age. Dr Mhatre discussed this new recommendation with WJHG. High cholesterol does not have early symptoms so it’s possible for an otherwise healthy 30 year old to have high cholesterol and not know it. And the longer you have it without any lifestyle changes or medical intervention, the more it can build up in your arteries. So go ahead and get yours checked!

Today, Dr Ajay Mhatre performed vascular procedures to open blockages in the legs through the wrist at the new Surgical Institute. Catheter procedures that access through the wrist, rather than accessing through the femoral artery in the groin area, allow patients to recover from their procedures significantly faster.
