You don't need to get accepted to MIT to learn from MIT.

Twenty-five years ago, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology made a decision that many universities would never consider.

Instead of keeping its course materials behind classroom walls, MIT put nearly its entire curriculum online and made it freely available to anyone with an internet connection.

The initiative became known as MIT OpenCourseWare.

What started as an experiment in 2001 has since grown into one of the largest educational projects in history.

Today, OpenCourseWare offers materials from more than 2,500 undergraduate and graduate courses, covering subjects ranging from physics and engineering to artificial intelligence, economics, biology, mathematics, and computer science.

Anyone can access lecture notes, exams, assignments, syllabi, and many video lectures without paying tuition, applying for admission, or creating an account.

According to MIT, more than 500 million people around the world have used OpenCourseWare resources over the past quarter century.

The impact reaches far beyond MIT's campus.

Students use the materials to prepare for exams, learn new skills, explore new careers, and supplement their education. Teachers and professors use them in classrooms across the world. Some learners have even credited MIT's free courses with helping them pass professional exams and qualify for new opportunities.

The project also helped inspire the global open-education movement, encouraging other universities to make their knowledge freely available online.

What's remarkable is that OpenCourseWare was originally launched as a 10-year initiative.

Twenty-five years later, it's still growing.

MIT now says it hopes to reach 1 billion learners in the coming decade while expanding access through new AI-powered learning tools.
