Professional Judgment and Client Autonomy
This is where optical gets genuinely complicated, and where a little more honesty is useful. When a client wants a frame that is going to cause problems, poor fit, bad proportions, wrong geometry for the prescription, too much decentration, thick edges, ugly cosmetics, whatever, you are in a real bind. Your professional obligation is to say something. Not because you are the taste police, but because the outcome is partly on you. If it comes back badly, they are not going to be angry at the frame. They are going to be angry at you, because you are the one who built it and handed it over.

But here is the part worth admitting: the two justifications for stepping in are not exactly the same. One is professional duty to the client. The other is self-protection. You want to save them from a bad result, and you also want to save yourself from a remake, a complaint, three follow-up adjustments, and a damaged relationship. Most of the time those point in the same direction. Sometimes they do not. And if you are not honest about that, it is easy to slide from sound judgment into plain old paternalism.
