Did you know that a vision screening and a comprehensive eye exam are not the same thing? You may be familiar with the vision screening that your children get at school. While those are helpful, it should not take the place of a yearly comprehensive eye exam with a licensed eye doctor.
If your child truly has a vision problem, it could affect their school performance. Some common eye conditions in children include: Myopia (nearsightedness), Hyperopia (farsightedness), and Astigmatism (where the cornea or lens has a different shape than normal). These can easily be corrected with the proper eyewear and could improve school performance.
Here are some tips in helping the health of your child's eyes:
*Eat a balanced diet-a healthy diet rich in fruits and veggies
*Limit screen time-increased screen time can worsen uncorrected vision problems
*Get enough sleep-our bodies and eyes heal when we sleep
*Spend time outdoors-going outdoors allows children to look at distant objects more, which allows their eyes to recover from strain and fatigue
*Use protective eyewear and sunglasses-about 90% of eye injuries can be prevented by protective eyewear; use sunglasses that have 100% UV protection
*Get regular (annual, unless otherwise requested) eye exams-this allows your doctor to keep consistent track of your child's developing eyes and gives them the ability to catch any issues quickly and effectively.
