What do people actually take away from therapy?

It’s not always an instrumental breakthrough moment. Often, it’s something small but powerful, that helps you to chip away at your negative core beliefs.

Here are just a few things you might take away from your next session 💛

Children learn better when their nervous system feels safe.🧡

🧠 Did you know that children can’t truly learn until they are calm?

Managing big emotions can be tricky, but breaking it down into manageable stages makes a world of difference. We've created a fantastic "Five Steps to Self-Regulation" visual guide to help children recognise and navigate their feelings—from 'Overwhelm' all the way back up to 'Calm'.

Take a peek at the preview in the FREE handout Comment STEP.jpg image attached! It’s an ideal resource for parents, carers, and educators to use at home or in the classroom.

👇 How to get your free copy: Simply comment the word STEP below, and we’ll send the printable handout straight to your messages! ✉️✨

FREE CHILD ANXIETY HELPFUL THOUGHTS WORKSHEET PDF

A worried thought can feel very big to a child, especially when they do not yet have the words to challenge it.

This printable Child Anxiety Helpful Thoughts Worksheet gives children a simple way to turn a “worry block” into a kinder, more balanced “helpful block”. They can practise changing thoughts like “I can’t do this” into “I can try one step”, or “I might mess up” into “Mistakes help me learn”.

It works well for a calm chat at home, a classroom wellbeing activity, counselling session, nurture group or therapy homework. There is also space for children to write about their own school worries, friendship problems, test nerves or frustrating moments.

Sometimes one small helpful sentence can make a hard moment feel more manageable.

FREE CALM DOWN WHEEL FOR CHILDREN: PRINTABLE COPING TOOL

Big feelings can make it hard for children to know what to do next. This printable Calm Down Wheel gives them a simple place to start.

It uses clear, child-friendly ideas for moments of worry, anger, sadness, overwhelm, tension, a racing heart or trouble focusing. Children can point to how they feel, then choose one small coping skill to try, like slow breathing, stretching, having a drink of water, writing worries down or hugging a soft toy.

A helpful prompt for the fridge, a calm corner, the classroom or a counselling space. It can make conversations about feelings feel less overwhelming too.

Some children know exactly what they want to say, but the social side of conversation can feel confusing.

They may interrupt without meaning to, talk at length about one topic, miss a joke, take words very literally, or struggle to tell when someone is bored, upset or wanting a turn. Group work, playground friendships and family gatherings can take far more effort than adults realise.

This is not about being rude, uncaring or “not trying hard enough”. Social communication difficulties can make unwritten rules hard to spot.

It can help when adults say things plainly. Explain the hidden meaning. Practise conversations without putting pressure on the child. Give them time to respond. Talk through facial expressions, feelings and social situations as they come up.

Small, patient support can make a real difference to a child who is working hard to understand a world full of unspoken messages.
