As children learn to talk, they often use patterns called phonological processes to simplify speech. These patterns are a normal part of development when children are young, but they typically fade as speech skills mature. Some of the main patterns we see in children in our practice include:

Fronting (Developed by 4 years of age):
Sounds made in the back of the mouth (like /k/ and /g/) are replaced with sounds made in the front of the mouth (like /t/ and /d/).
Examples:
“tootie” for “cookie”
“tat” for “cat”

Stopping (Developed by 3-5 years of age depending on sound):
Continuous airflow sounds (like /f/, /s/, or /sh/) are replaced with stop sounds such as /p/, /b/, or /t/.
Examples:
“tun” for “sun”
“tunny” for “funny”

Frontal Lisp (Developed by 4.5 years of age):
The tongue pushes forward between or against the front teeth during sounds like /s/ and /z/, creating a distorted sound quality.
Examples:
“thun” for “sun”
“yeth” for “yes”

Lateral Lisp (not a part of typical development):
Air escapes over the sides of the tongue during sounds like /s/, /z/, /sh/, and /ch/, often creating a “slushy” sound quality.
Examples:
“shunglashesh” for “sunglasses”

Gliding (Developed by 5 years of age):
Sounds like /l/ and /r/ are replaced with /w/ or /y/.
Examples:
“wowipop for “lollipop”
“wed” for “red”

Phonological processes and speech sound patterns are part of typical speech development, but when they persist beyond expected ages, speech may become difficult to understand and therapy support may be beneficial. Early intervention can help children build clearer speech, confidence, literacy foundations, and meaningful communication skills.

Speech Sound Development:

Did you know children develop speech sounds over several years? Speech development builds from early sounds to more complex sounds as oral motor skills, coordination, and language grow!

2 - 3 years / p,b,m,d,n,h,t,k,g,w,ing,f
4-5 years / l,j,ch,s,v,sh,z
5- 6 years / r, th

These early sounds help lay the foundation for future speech clarity, intelligibility, phonological awareness, literacy skills, and overall communication development. As children grow, their speech sound inventory continues to expand while motor planning, oral coordination, and sound patterns become more refined.

Every child develops at their own pace, but understanding milestones can help parents know what to listen for and when to seek support. Early foundations matter for clear communication, confidence, literacy, and meaningful connection.

Speech sound development is a journey that begins long before a child can clearly say every sound.

From coos and babbles… to first words… to combining sounds into clearer speech… children spend the first 5+ years of life building the foundation for communication. As they grow, their speech sound inventory expands, coordination improves, and they gradually master more complex sounds and speech patterns.

Every stage matters — because speech development is a process, not a race.

Understanding what skills typically develop over time can help parents support confidence, communication, and connection along the way.

• how speech sounds develop over time
• what is considered age-appropriate
• early vs. later developing sounds

Building skills at home doesn’t have to feel like extra work—it’s already built into your day.

🚗 On the go: Use car rides for simple practice—sound repetition, naming items you see, or working on breathing through the nose with lips closed.

🪥 In your routines: Daily habits like brushing teeth or getting ready for bed are perfect for practicing lip closure, tongue placement, and following simple directions.

🧸 Through play: This is where the magic happens—model language, encourage turn-taking, and build oral-motor skills in a natural, low-pressure way.

Small, consistent moments lead to meaningful, functional growth over time.

Lip closure is the foundation for breathing, feeding, and speech.

Here are 4 simple ways we love to build lip strength and awareness:

~Popsicle stick holds
~Button pulls
~Lip rubs
~Resting face

That “resting face” we’re always working toward:
lips together, jaw slightly hovering, tongue resting on the roof of the mouth, breathing through the nose.

These small, intentional exercises support bigger things—functional breathing, efficient feeding, and clear communication.
