Coffee, community, and cognitive recovery! ☕️📚

Our ReMed clients in Columbia, Maryland, recently spent a wonderful afternoon at Barnes & Noble. But this outing was about more than just a good book and a warm drink.

Did you know that reading is a powerful tool for brain healing? By stimulating neural plasticity, it helps rebuild cognitive pathways, boost attention span, and sharpen memory after a neurological injury. Every page turned is a step forward.

Last weekend, the ReMed team in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, came together to support the Brain Injury Association of Pennsylvania by participating in the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community. This is a day of fun, fitness, and fundraising focused on human service organizations that improve the lives of our neighbors. It was a beautiful day for a 5K and to support advocacy for brain injury!

ReMed in Columbia, Maryland, partnered with a local Assisted Living facility to host a Holistic Wellness perfume-making class. Two of our residents, Ray and Jamal, stepped up to help set up the event, demonstrating great initiative and collaboration. After assisting, they joined the workshop, engaging beautifully with the senior residents.

We are also incredibly grateful to Adrienne for her dedication and assistance during the event.

The day concluded with live entertainment, community dancing, and plenty of milestones—including many compliments on Jamal's new smile and his impressive dance moves! Programs like these foster confidence and meaningful independence. We are excited for Ray, who has already been invited back to call Bingo numbers next week!

In the most recent episode, Brittany Horvath, SLPD, CCC-SLP, Speech-Language Pathologist, from Collage Home & Community Rehabilitation Partners, in Dallas, Texas joined the ASHA Voices podcast, spoke about the profound evolution of an SLP’s role when a patient reaches the end of life.

Brittany shared her expertise on navigating the delicate transition from traditional rehabilitation to compassionate palliative care. Alongside Marissa James, she explored the vital importance of prioritizing a patient’s "voice and choice" in dietary decisions, ensuring that autonomy and dignity remain at the forefront of clinical care. Her insights shed light on how SLPs can successfully integrate into interprofessional teams to advocate for informed consent while balancing clinical safety with a patient’s quality of life.

Throughout the conversation, Brittany highlighted the shift toward comfort feeding and the powerful impact of providing communication access during a patient’s final journey. Her perspective as a home-and-community-based provider offers a unique roadmap for clinicians looking to deliver person-centered care in the most sensitive of circumstances.
