The mobile lung-screening team is heading to Paoli on Wednesday, July 22!

Lung cancer screening is easy, with no need for needles, special diet or change of clothes—and it can save your life. Screenings are covered by insurance, including Medicare and Medicaid.

• Currently smoke or have quit in the last 15 years

Research from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission shows about 74% of firework-related injuries happen in the weeks before and after July 4. The National Fire Protection Association reports that most of the thousands of people injured while using consumer fireworks over the holiday are children or teenagers.

“To our community members, I encourage you to be safe while enjoying this holiday,” said Robert (Bob) Adams, DO, IU Health Bloomington Emergency Medicine physician. “While Emergency departments and first responders are here to help, we know you’d much rather be enjoying the festivities instead of coming into the hospital because of an injury or medical issue.”

Congratulations to Nurse Excellence Award winner, Yvonne Rutherford, RN!

Yvonne started her IU Health journey in Bloomington as a float nurse in 1998 before transferring to the IU Health Paoli Obstetric unit in 2006. She still works in Obstetrics one day a week, every other week, but primarily supports her team as Associate Administrator.

“As the AA, I help anyone in the facility who needs assistance. This is a wide range of responsibilities," she says. "I jokingly say my role is 'jack of all trades and master of none.'" Her team may disagree on the “master of none” part.

“She’s always striving to be the best she can be,” shares Mendy Lambdin, RN. “She is often in the right place at the right time and ready to jump in and help with emergencies, regardless of it being on a workday or vacation trip. She’s also been a trusted friend and peer to many throughout her years here at Paoli.”

It's going to be another hot day in south-central Indiana, and local Emergency departments are prepared to see more heat-related issues coming through their doors.

Here are some safety tips:
• Stay hydrated with water.
• For children, encourage frequent water intake and have it readily available. Infants under six months should not drink water; breast milk or formula will help their hydration.
• Dress lightly in both color and material.
• Plan to have extra rest time when outside.
• Use water to cool off. Water mists or safe swimming are great ways to cool the skin.
• Never leave a child alone in a car for any time.

Congratulations to Partner in Care Award winner, Jamie Sharp!

Jamie is an administrative assistant who makes a difference by helping patients and her team.

“I support the team by ordering supplies, placing special orders, and being a resource—I get asked all the random questions,” she explains. “For patients, it is typically helping them with the kiosk self-registration or wayfinding.”

Beyond daily responsibilities, Jamie makes a meaningful impact on obstetric patients experiencing loss. Through work with a local organization, she helped implement care bags and expanded lactation-after-loss resources, providing comfort and dignity for those experiencing a miscarriage or infant/child loss.

When asked what all healthcare workers should know, Jamie says, “You are going to make a difference in someone's life. It could be a visitor or a patient, big or small. You will make an impact.”
