For much of my medical training, uncertainty was treated as a problem to solve.

Order another test. Gather more data. Refine the diagnosis. Reduce the unknown.

Those are extraordinary strengths of modern medicine, and they have transformed countless lives.

But over time, both in practice and in my own life, I've begun wondering whether uncertainty itself is also something we need to learn to live with—not because medicine has failed, but because uncertainty is woven into the human experience.

Every patient eventually encounters it.

Waiting for results.
Living with a chronic illness.
Making decisions without guarantees.
Caring for aging parents.
Wondering if a treatment will work.
Wondering what comes next.

I've come to believe that health isn't simply about reducing uncertainty whenever we can. It's also about cultivating the capacity to remain present when certainty isn't available.

This article explores that question through the lenses of medicine, Ayurveda, yoga, and one very memorable conversation about my grandmother.

I'd love to know your thoughts.
