The medical staff for these teams work hard, sometimes for free, and take on a lot of liability. I can only speak for myself but I think the comments that I’m seeing of people saying the team docs are incentivized to let players play despite medical risk is crazy… and not worth our license.

IF, big IF, there was mismanagement, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t intentional.

What do yall think?

Go from listening to Jeezy to the sound of my knees cracking with each step.

Are yall stopping or keep going?

This is one of the oddest cases I’ve ever heard, in an athlete or otherwise. As a team physician who knows the complexity of what it’s like in the locker room, I know that we don’t have all the details and that only makes people speculate more. But given how public this story is and how COMMON blood clots are, I think it’s important to speak about this.

Wishing Jalen well and I healthy recovery and hopeful RETURN to the game he champions.

Superficial blood clot in an athlete: let’s discuss

NFL football mixes 2 major risk factors for blood clots, long distance travel + trauma. We’re more concerned if someone has a DEEP vein thrombosis because of the risk of embolization (blood clot travels) to the lungs causing a pulmonary embolism. That risk isn’t zero with a superficial clot, but very uncommon.

Obviously, professional athletes prioritize return to play, getting back out there as quickly and safely as possible, so these medical problems and treatments aren’t as straight forward as they may seem.

Lp(a) Horizon trial was a failure, but it’s not a big deal

Hate seeing this happen to another young athlete.

If you are a coach, parent, or athletic director — please take 5 minutes this week to ask:
-Where is our AED and does it work?
-Does every coach and player know how to recognize sudden cardiac arrest and start CPR?
-What is our EAP for getting EMS onto the field?

This issue should be a nonissue, but let’s discuss.

We can have a discussion about biological differences and the nuances of sports physiology without attacking a group of people, unprovoked.

“Protecting” women shouldn’t be used as a fraudulent reason to be divisive and hateful.

Sports is the universal equalizer and it should be allowed for all… let’s figure out a way to make it possible.

Getting old doesn’t have to come with a wheelchair and slow movement.

Working on your heart health, mobility, and functionality now makes the future you someone that can still travel, play sports, live independently, and pick up your grandkids.

Change your perception and you’ll change what’s to come.
