New Interlude Podcast is here with Kathy Myers! Kathy is a long-term breast cancer survivor who shares her story today from a surprise diagnosis to a powerful, community-centered life after treatment. We recorded this conversation on Kathy’s 67th birthday, which was really meaningful.

Kathy was diagnosed back in 2002 when her doctor felt a small breast lump just shortly after a normal mammogram. She was diagnosed with stage I breast cancer and went through treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. She initially joined a poetry group but then discovered dragon boating. Dragon boat racing is a high-energy water sport originating in ancient China. Teams of up to 20 paddlers move in unison to a drummer’s beat, in long boats decorated with dragon heads and tails.

Through dragon boat racing, she found community and her team Hope Afloat USA (based out of Philadelphia, on the Schuylkill River) is made up of breast cancer survivors and thrivers. Kathy talks about how transformative dragon boat racing has been for her over the last two decades and reflects on the complex emotions of survivorship: navigating family and caregivers’ coping styles, ending a toxic marriage, finding love again, worrying about her daughters’ risk and undergoing genetic testing, and learning that it’s okay to keep talking about cancer even when treatment is “over.” This conversation is about movement, community, and connection as medicine—finding your people, and redefining what it means not just to survive, but to truly live after cancer.

Thank you Kathy for joining me!! You can find the Interlude Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or on my website, www.drteplinsky.com. I hope you will love this conversation!

Pregnancy 🤰and Breast Cancer Updates:

1. POSITIVE Study Update (Pagani O et al Annals of Oncology 2026): Evaluated temporary interruption of adjuvant endocrine therapy (after 18-30 months and for up to 2 years) to attempt in young patients with breast cancer. Temporary interruption of adjuvant endocrine therapy for pregnancy was feasible & safe in early follow-up (median 41 months) and did not increase short-term risk of recurrence. They now have updated results with longer follow-up.

With a median follow up of 71 months (nearly 6 years), the 5 year incidence of a BC event (cancer coming back in the same breast or nearby lymph nodes, spreading to another part of the body, or developing a new cancer in the opposite breast) was 12.3% in the POSITIVE study (vs 13.2% in a comparable population). 5 year incidence of a distant BC event was 6.2% (vs 8.3% in comparable population). More than 2/3 of women had a live birth and most resumed endocrine therapy per protocol. Having longer follow up is very reassuring!

2. ASCO 2026: Optimal timing of endocrine therapy interruption for pregnancy in young women with hormone receptor-positive early BC (Jochum F et al).
🔸 The impact of temporary endocrine therapy interruption depends on baseline recurrence risk and prior endocrine therapy duration.
🔸Interruption after 24 months appears safe for low- or intermediate-risk women but high-risk patients may benefit from delaying interruption to at least 36 months.
🔸It is not clear what they defined as high risk but POSITIVE had mostly stage 1-2 patients w BC. We do generally do think about a longer duration before interrupting ET in stage 3 patients (or higher risk—based on size, lymph nodes, molecular testing like Oncotype) so this study does support that.

3. ASCO 2026: Long-term safety outcomes of pregnancy among young BC survivors (Sorouri K et al): prospective study with 12 years of median follow-up: pregnancy and live birth after breast cancer did not impact breast cancer events or overall survival, regardless of ER status. *we don’t know when people gave birth after diagnosis and if they interrupted ET.

A wonderful day at Camp Breastie! It was so incredible to see so many wonderful members of the community.

Honored to have been invited to speak on two panels: Wellness Your Way (with .the.rd and ) and Beyond The Headlines with and . Both were powerful conversations focused on empowerment, how we consume information, small steps to bigger lifestyle changes and how wellness is going to be different for each person.

Although I was only there for the day, seeing the community, joy, and connection at Camp was truly magical. I am always so grateful to be invited into these spaces. Thank you ! See you in 2027!

‼️‼️ Hot off the press! Girdestrant Update: FDA Expected to Make a Decision in Early Stage Breast Cancer by November 30, 2026!! (For stage 1-3 HR+/HER2- BC). (decision in MBC in December 2026) exciting!!!

SERD Updates from and other recent updates! This is a longer video but it has everything you need to know!

SERDs are selective estrogen receptor degraders that are currently approved in metastatic breast cancer for patients with HR+/HER2- breast cancer and an ESR1 mutation. They are generally used in patients whose cancer has disease after progression following at least one line of endocrine therapy (typically an aromatase inhibitor +/- CDK 4/6 inhibitor. There are currently 2 oral SERDs approved: imlunestrant and elacestrant. (Fulvestrant (Faslodex) is a SERD that has been around for a long time but it is an injection). Other SERDs are in development. In this video, I talk about how we use SERDs in MBC, where things are currently with camizestrant that is in development.

I then talk about current status of SERDs in early stage breast BC- specifically giredestrant in early stage BC from the liDERA trial.

Let me now your questions!

Aah!! Advanced reader copies of my book, Beyond The Pink: Navigating Life, Health and Breast Cancer are here!!! Officially available 9/29/2026!!

It’s incredible to see it in print! (Final book will be in hardcover). There will be e-book and audiobook versions as well. Having the opportunity to write this book has been a dream come true and I cannot wait to share it with the world. We’ve already gotten a few early and truly wonderful endorsements from some of the best physicians and patient advocates in this space!! 🩷

This book is everything I wish I had time to tell every single patient at a visit. It’s about how to live well after a breast cancer diagnosis (or after a previvor diagnosis).

Some key topics you’ll find include:
🔸Diagnosis and treatment
🔸Living with MBC
🔸Genetics and Previvors
🔸 Equity and disparities in breast cancer care
🔸 Fertility
🔸 Menopause
🔸 Sexual health
🔸 Cardiovascular, musculoskeletal and brain health
🔸Mental health and body image
🔸 Relationships and parenting
🔸 Lifestyle habits…and more!!!!

Throughout the book, you’ll also read interviews with experts in the field and read previvor, survivor and thriver stories. This is for anyone - whether they are newly diagnosed or diagnosed 10 years ago. It can be helpful for a loved one as well to better understand diagnosis, treatment and beyond.
