As the weather gets colder, this is a question we hear a lot: Can I use a hot tub if I have varicose veins or chronic venous insufficiency? ♨️🦵

In general, yes — but moderation matters. Hot water can cause veins to dilate, which may increase pressure in the legs and contribute to swelling or discomfort, so Dr. Chuback recommends keeping hot tub sessions relatively short.

After a vein procedure, however, it’s a different story. During the healing period, Dr. Chuback advises patients to avoid hot tubs until any small incisions or needle punctures have fully healed, and to be cautious even after that while the treated veins are still healing.

How long does insurance approval for vein treatment take?

If you’re experiencing leg aching, heaviness, swelling, cramping, itching, or bulging varicose veins, an evaluation can help determine whether an underlying vein problem—such as venous insufficiency—is contributing to your symptoms.

Christina, our surgical coordinator and prior authorization specialist, explains how the approval process works at Chuback Vein Center. After your initial consultation, venous ultrasound, and personalized treatment plan, our team submits the necessary information to your insurance company to request approval.

Depending on your evaluation, recommended procedures may include endovenous laser treatment (EVLT), ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, or ambulatory microphlebectomy. Treatment recommendations are tailored to your symptoms, ultrasound findings, and individual needs.

Once the authorization request is submitted, the insurance review may take approximately two to four weeks, as Christina explains in this video.
