🍂 OCTOBER IS ECZEMA AWARENESS MONTH! 🍂

💊 “What are JAK inhibitors, and how do they help eczema?” 🤔
Tired of the constant itching, redness, and frustrating eczema flare-ups? 😩 Modern medicine has some exciting treatment options! These are an ORAL PILL treatment option, differing from some of the injectable medications for eczema.

🔬 WHAT ARE JAK INHIBITORS?
Think of your immune system like a fire alarm. 🚨 In people with eczema, certain inflammatory signals can become overactive, causing itching, redness, and irritated skin.

💊 JAK inhibitors help turn down those signals, calming inflammation and reducing that never-ending urge to scratch!

✨ WHY ARE THEY EXCITING?
✅ Can provide rapid relief from itching
✅ Help reduce inflammation and eczema flare-ups
✅ Can improve skin appearance and sleep quality
✅ Available as prescription creams or oral medications

💡 DID YOU KNOW?
JAK inhibitors are different from steroids! They target specific pathways involved in inflammation.
Examples include:
🔹 Opzelura® (ruxolitinib) – Prescription cream
🔹 Rinvoq® (upadacitinib) – Oral medication
🔹 Cibinqo® (abrocitinib) – Oral medication

⚠️ These medications aren't right for everyone. Side effects and safety precautions vary, and oral JAK inhibitors carry important FDA boxed warnings, including risks of serious infections, blood clots, cardiovascular events, and malignancy.

👨‍⚕️ THE BOTTOM LINE: If moisturizers and traditional eczema treatments aren't providing enough relief, newer medications like JAK inhibitors may be worth discussing with your dermatology provider!

💉 WHAT IS DUPIXENT? 🤔

🍂 October is Eczema Awareness Month!
Tired of the constant itching, scratching, and frustrating eczema flare-ups? 😩 There may be more treatment options than you think!

💉 Meet Dupixent® (dupilumab)!
Dupixent is an FDA-approved biologic medication used to treat moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) in eligible patients as young as 6 months old.

🔬 HOW DOES IT WORK?
Unlike traditional steroid creams, Dupixent targets specific immune signals—interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-13 (IL-13)—that contribute to eczema inflammation and itching.

✨ WHY DO DERMATOLOGISTS LOVE IT?
✅ Helps reduce itching and inflammation
✅ Can improve skin clearance and reduce eczema flares
✅ May improve sleep and quality of life
✅ Steroid-free treatment option
✅ Convenient injections, typically every 2–4 weeks depending on age and weight

💡 DID YOU KNOW? Dupixent is NOT an oral steroid or a traditional broad immunosuppressant! It works by targeting specific pathways involved in eczema.

⚠️ Common side effects include injection-site reactions and eye problems such as conjunctivitis. Not everyone is a candidate.

👨‍⚕️ THE BOTTOM LINE: If your eczema continues to flare despite moisturizers and prescription creams, it may be time to explore additional treatment options!

🍂 ECZEMA AWARENESS MONTH 🍂

“Is it eczema…or just dry skin?” 🤔
It’s one of the most common questions we hear in dermatology! While they can look similar, there are some important clues:

🧴 Dry skin usually feels rough, flaky, or tight and often improves with a good moisturizer.

🔥 Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is inflammation of the skin and may cause:
🔹 Intense itching
🔹 Red, pink, brown, or inflamed patches
🔹 Scaling, cracking, or thickened skin
🔹 Recurrent flares that keep coming back
🔹 Scratching that can lead to bleeding, crusting, or infection

💡 The big clue? Eczema usually ITCHES—sometimes a lot! The more you scratch, the more inflamed the skin becomes, creating the frustrating itch-scratch cycle.

🧴 If moisturizer alone isn’t controlling your “dry skin,” there may be more going on. Eczema can often be managed with good skin-barrier care and, when needed, prescription topical or systemic treatments.

📅 October is Eczema Awareness Month! If that stubborn, itchy “dry skin” keeps coming back, consider having it evaluated by a dermatology provider.

🦠 “WHY DO MY WARTS KEEP COMING BACK?!” 😩

You freeze it. It disappears. You celebrate. 🎉

Then…SURPRISE! It’s back—or brought friends! 😳

So what’s going on?
🦠 Warts are caused by HPV. Certain types of human papillomavirus infect the outer layers of the skin and cause those rough, stubborn bumps.

👉 WHY DO THEY SPREAD?
HPV can enter through tiny breaks in the skin. Picking, scratching, shaving over a wart, or sharing certain personal items can spread the virus to nearby skin—or occasionally to other people.

🔄 WHY DO THEY COME BACK?
Treatments destroy the visible wart, but HPV-infected cells may remain in the surrounding skin. Your immune system also plays a major role in finally clearing the virus.

🩺 HOW DO WE TREAT THEM?
Depending on the wart, options may include:

1. 🧊 Cryotherapy (freezing)
2. 🧴 Salicylic acid or prescription treatments
3. 💉 Injections that stimulate an immune response
4. 🔬 Other procedures for stubborn warts

⏳ Derm Tip: Warts often require multiple treatments, so don’t get discouraged if one freezing session doesn’t finish the job!

🚫 And PLEASE stop picking them—you may be giving your wart a free ride to its next destination! 😂

💡 BOTTOM LINE: Warts are stubborn because we’re not just treating a bump—we’re waiting for your immune system to help defeat the virus behind it.

🔥 “WHY DO I KEEP GETTING BOILS?!” 😩

If painful bumps keep popping up in your armpits, groin, buttocks, or under your breasts, it might NOT be just another boil!

🔎 Meet HIDRADENITIS SUPPURATIVA (HS)!
HS is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes painful, recurring lumps, abscesses, drainage, and sometimes permanent scarring.

🤔 WHAT CAUSES IT?
HS develops when hair follicles become blocked and inflamed. Genetics, hormones, smoking, and obesity can contribute, but the exact cause isn't fully understood.

🚨 IMPORTANT: HS is NOT caused by
poor hygiene, and it is NOT contagious!

💊 CAN IT BE TREATED? ABSOLUTELY!
Treatment depends on severity and may include:
🧴 Topical treatments: Prescription clindamycin and antiseptic washes.
💊 Oral medications: Antibiotics and, for certain patients, hormonal therapies.
💉 Biologic medications: Humira®, Cosentyx®, and Bimzelx® target inflammation in patients with moderate-to-severe HS.

✂️ Procedures: Steroid injections for selected painful nodules, deroofing, and surgical removal of persistent tunnels or affected tissue.

💡 DERM TIP: Repeatedly draining boils without treating the underlying inflammation may lead to continued flare-ups and scarring.

❤️ BOTTOM LINE: If you're constantly battling painful boils in the same areas, don't suffer in silence. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a BIG difference!

🤔 “WHAT’S ACTUALLY INSIDE THAT CYST?”

Spoiler alert…it’s usually NOT pus! 😳
An epidermal inclusion cyst is a common, usually harmless bump that forms when skin cells become trapped beneath the surface.

🔬 So what’s inside?
The cyst fills with KERATIN—the same protein found in your skin, hair, and nails. As keratin builds up, it creates a thick, white/yellow, sometimes very smelly material. 👃😬

🔥 Why does it suddenly get angry?
Cysts can become inflamed—turning red, swollen, tender, and painful. Sometimes they can also rupture or become infected.

🩺 How do we treat them?

👀 Leave it alone: Small, asymptomatic cysts may not need treatment.

💉 Steroid injection: Can sometimes calm an inflamed cyst.

🩹 Drainage: May provide relief for a large, painful cyst—but the cyst can return because the cyst wall remains.

✂️ SURGICAL REMOVAL: Removing the entire cyst and its wall offers the best chance of preventing it from coming back.

🚫 Derm Tip: Resist the urge to squeeze it yourself! You may cause inflammation, rupture, infection, and scarring.

💡 BOTTOM LINE: That bump may look like a giant pimple…but what’s underneath can be an entirely different story! 🔍

🌥️ “WAIT…HOW DID I GET SKIN CANCER THERE?!” 😳

We talk A LOT about sun exposure and skin cancer—but here’s something that surprises many patients:

👉 Skin cancer can develop where the sun DOESN’T shine!

☀️ UV radiation is a major risk factor for many skin cancers, but it’s not the only factor. Genetics, immune suppression, age, certain exposures, and random DNA changes can also contribute.

🔎 Melanoma can occasionally develop in surprising places, including:
🦶 Soles of the feet
💅 Under the fingernails or toenails
👄 Inside the mouth
👁️ The eye
🩲 Ge***al areas

That’s why a good skin check isn’t just about your face, arms, and back!

🚩 Derm Tip: Watch for NEW, CHANGING, unusual, bleeding, or non-healing spots—even in places that rarely see sunlight.

💡 BOTTOM LINE: Sun protection is incredibly important, but “I never get sun there” doesn’t automatically mean “it can’t be skin cancer.”

🔍 Know your skin. Notice changes. When in doubt—check it out!

✨ TRETINOIN: DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK? 🤔

You’ve probably heard about tretinoin on social media—but this one isn’t just hype! 📱➡️🔬

Tretinoin is a prescription retinoid derived from vitamin A, and it has decades of research behind it.

So what can it actually do? 👇
🧼 ACNE: Helps unclog pores and prevent new breakouts.
☀️ SUN DAMAGE: Can improve uneven pigmentation and rough texture over time.
✨ FINE LINES: Encourages skin-cell turnover and stimulates collagen production.
🎯 DARK SPOTS: Can gradually improve certain types of discoloration.
But there’s a catch… PATIENCE! ⏳

Tretinoin isn’t an overnight treatment. Results develop gradually, and dryness, peeling, redness, or irritation can happen—especially when starting.

💡 Derm Tip: Start slowly, use a gentle moisturizer, apply only a pea-sized amount for the entire face, and wear SPF 30+ every morning. ☀️

🚫 More tretinoin ≠ faster results. It usually just means more irritation! 😬

BOTTOM LINE: Tretinoin works—but consistency, proper application, and realistic expectations are the secret sauce. 🙌
