SAVE THE DATE, NEIGHBORS: SEPTEMBER 12 🍂

Mark your calendars for a day of fellowship, food, and hope. The Community Wellness Walk & Recovery Picnic returns Saturday, September 12, from 10 AM to 3 PM at Twin Lakes Park in Paris, co-hosted by HRC Recovery Support and the Edgar County ROSC Council.

Come walk, eat well, hear stories of restoration, and celebrate what September is all about: National Recovery Month, and the truth that people in our own community are healing and rebuilding every single day.

Recovery is real. Treatment works. And on September 12, we celebrate it together.

Direct Support Professional Recognition Week runs September 13 through 19, and we intend to make some noise about the people who do that work.

The Community Wellness Walk and Recovery Picnic is Saturday, September 12 at Twin Lakes Park in Paris.

And underneath all of it, the ordinary work continues. Families in Marshall and across Edgar and Clark Counties caring for a loved one with an intellectual or developmental disability, and HRC's Voucher Respite program helping them find a few hours to breathe.

Harvest schedules. Shift work. Church on Sunday and ball games on Tuesday. Life in Chrisman and our rural counties does not run on a tidy clock, and neither should respite.

HRC’s Voucher Respite program serves families of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities across 17 East Central Illinois counties, and it is family-directed on purpose. You pick the provider your loved one already trusts. You pick the hours that fit your season of life. The voucher helps cover the cost.

THERE IS NO ONE SHAPE FOR A GOOD JOB 🛠️

Some of our neighbors with intellectual and developmental disabilities thrive on a crew. Some shine one-on-one. Some dream of a job built around a special gift, and some are exploring self-employment with the right support behind them.

That is the beauty of where employment services are headed in Illinois: more paths, more choices, and support that fits the person instead of asking the person to fit the mold. HRC’s employment team helps job seekers with I/DD in Kansas and across our counties discover the work that fits.

WHO ANSWERS WHEN YOU REACH OUT? PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN THERE. 🫂

HRC’s Recovery Support Specialists are neighbors from right here in Edgar and Clark Counties who have walked the road of recovery themselves. They are trained, credentialed, and called to this work, and they remember exactly how heavy that first phone call felt.

What they offer is simple and powerful: someone in your corner. Help finding treatment. A ride when there is not one. Company at a meeting. Encouragement on the days when hope runs thin near the courthouse square or anywhere else in our two counties.

GUESS WHO IS COMING BACK TO SCHOOL? 🎒

When students in Edgar and Clark County classrooms head back this month, HRC’s Prevention Education team will be right behind them with Too Good For Drugs, a classroom program that builds the skills kids actually use: setting goals, making decisions, handling emotions, and standing firm with friends.

From Mayo to every school we serve, prevention is not about scaring kids. It is about equipping them, one lesson and one conversation at a time, long before a hard choice ever shows up.

Some of the finest things in this community start the same way. A full room, a stack of cards, a good-natured groan when somebody else calls it first.

This month we had the honor of welcoming members of the Paris IL Lions Club to the Life Center, where they presented HRC with a gift of about $2,000 raised through their Bingo for a Better Life bingo night. Every dollar of it came from neighbors right here who bought a card, pulled up a chair, and decided an evening of fun could also be an act of generosity.

That is stewardship the way this corner of Illinois has always done it. Quietly, cheerfully, and together.

The Lions have been showing up for this community for a long while now, and we are grateful to be counted among the people they walk alongside. Gifts like this one help us keep the doors open for individuals and families seeking mental health support, recovery services, and disability services across Edgar and Clark Counties.

To everyone who came out and played, thank you. You may not have taken home the blackout prize, but you gave something that will matter to a neighbor you will likely never meet.

In West Union and small towns like it, many families caring for a loved one with an intellectual or developmental disability have never reached out for support before.

Often, respite is the first door they walk through.

MEDICAID FRIENDS: WATCH YOUR MAILBOX THIS SUMMER 📬

Illinois Medicaid is beginning to reach out to some adults about new work and activity reporting rules that start January 1, 2027, along with renewals twice a year for some. Many people will be exempt, including many living with disabilities or serious health conditions, and no one needs to act until the state contacts them directly.

Two simple steps to take this week, from Scottland to every corner of our counties: make sure the state has your current address, phone, and email at ABE.Illinois.gov under Manage My Case, and open every letter from the State of Illinois right away.
One more thing, neighbors: Illinois will never ask you for money to renew or apply for Medicaid. If anyone does, it is a scam, and you can report it at 1-844-ILFRAUD.

If you receive services with us, bring any Medicaid letter to your therapist or caseworker. We will help you make sense of it. Learn more at hfs.illinois.gov.

THE WHOLE TOWN IS THE CLASSROOM 🌳

Some of the best days in HRC’s Community Day Services do not happen inside a building at all. Through CDS Without Walls, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities spend their days out in the community: the Marshall library, the park, the grocery store, a ball game, wherever life is happening.

Meaningful days are built on choice. Our neighbors with I/DD choose where they go and what they pursue, building real skills and real friendships in the places everyone shares.
