One dead battery was all it took.

Twenty minutes into church,
his hearing devices flashed dead.

Wrong batteries.
Not fully charged.

Sound stopped.

The service didn’t.

People kept singing.
Responding.
Laughing at the right moments.

The world carried on
as if nothing had changed.

But for him, everything had.

He tried lip-reading.
Too fast.
Too many voices.
Heads turning away.
No signing available.

Later, he explained it in his own words:

“It feels like you’re alone with no support.
You don’t know what’s happening around you.
I wish someone was beside me
to tell me what was going on
and to tell others what was happening with me.”

This is what inaccessibility looks like.

Not shouting.
Just exclusion built into the spaces...

Spaces where everything is spoken:
instructions, prayers, responses, cues
with no other way to follow
when sound disappears.

Churches.
Assemblies.
Community events.

Places where the moment moves on
and the person without access is expected
to sit quietly and cope.

Being deaf in a hearing world often means this:
when sound is lost,
participation quietly goes with it.

And the expectation remains
that you’ll manage.
That you won’t interrupt.
That you’ll wait for it to be over.
