Stretching. It does the body good!

Stretching. We all know that this should be a part of our daily exercise routine to help prevent stiffness, but did you know that there are a few more benefits that you can gain by taking a few minutes from your day to simply stretch?
Stretching can actually help you to gain strength. When we don’t stretch, our muscles become shortened and tight, and when we ask these muscles to actually work, they are weak and are unable to lengthen completely. This, in turn, will lead to injury such as a pulled muscle.
Sitting for long periods of time can cause the leg muscles, such as the hamstrings, to shorten and tighten. When you decide to use those muscles during activity, something as simple as walking could become strenuous on the muscles and the surrounding joints. To prevent injury and to strengthen those muscles, one needs to add stretching to their daily routine.
Stretching also helps to decrease stress. Our lives are busy with day to day activities and stress can quickly build. When stress increases, so can pain. Some areas could be in the neck or lower back. Taking a few minutes out of your day can refocus those defensive responses and bring a sense of well-being and will relieve tension in the body.
Stretching does not have to be a long drawn out routine that takes a huge chunk out of your day. Just simply taking a few minutes to stretch out the larger muscles in the body, can help one to reduce stress and reground themselves. -L.E.
