Autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis affect millions of people worldwide. Yet many current treatments suppress the immune system broadly, increasing the risk of infection.

Join us this week for an HMRI Scientific Lecture featuring Jeniffer B. Hernandez, PhD, Associate Professor of Immunology at Keck Graduate Institute School of Pharmacy & Health Sciences.

In her presentation, "Keeping the Immune System in Check: How a Proton-Sensing Receptor (GPR65) Regulates Autoimmunity," Dr. Hernandez will discuss how GPR65 regulates immune cell metabolism and autoimmune disease progression, and how targeting this pathway may offer a more precise approach to treating autoimmune disorders while preserving overall immune function.

Today, HMRI welcomed students from the Blair High School and Middle School Health Careers Academy in Pasadena for a day focused on scientific discovery, mentorship, and career exploration.

Students had the opportunity to learn more about biomedical research through an presentation by HMRI Professor, Cardiovascular Research and Scientific Director, Education Programs, Nicole Purcell PhD, followed by a guided laboratory tour led by HMRI Postdoctoral Fellow and Instructor, Khaja Shameem Mohammed Abdul, PhD.

One of the best parts of the visit was seeing students engage so thoughtfully with the scientists, ask insightful questions, and explore what a future in healthcare and research could look like. Experiences like these can make a lasting impact by helping students see themselves in STEM spaces and introducing them to careers they may not have previously considered.

HMRI is proud to partner with programs that connect students with science, mentorship, and hands-on learning opportunities that inspire the next generation of researchers and healthcare professionals. đź’™

🧠 What if brain bleeds could be stopped without relying on traditional clotting?

Join us this week for an HMRI Scientific Lecture featuring Abdala Elkhal, PhD, Assistant Professor of Immunology and head of the Neuro-Cardio-Immunology Laboratory at HMRI - Huntington Medical Research Institutes. Dr. Elkhal’s research explores how immune signaling and NAD+ pathways may offer a new way to control hemorrhage and reduce inflammation, with implications for stroke, cardiovascular disease, and other life-threatening conditions.

This talk is free and open to the public. Titled "Stopping Brain Bleeds Without a Clot: A New Endothelial Way to Control Hemorrhage," this presentation will highlight how innovative science is reshaping our understanding of how the body responds to injury and how we might better treat it.
