South Mississippi Mental Health Center announces Executive Director Joseph G. Manuel has submitted his resignation, effective September 4, 2026.
Joseph shared, after careful reflection, he has chosen to step down with deep gratitude for the opportunity to serve Jackson County alongside a team he described as dedicated, compassionate, and committed to the community’s wellbeing.
He expressed confidence in the continued strength of the Center and in the team’s ability to carry the mission forward. Over the coming weeks, Joseph will work closely with leadership to ensure a smooth transition.
South Mississippi Mental Health Center recognizes the herculean effort that Joseph undertook to get the Center certified under the MS Department of Mental Health and to get the entity up and running. We thank Joseph for his service and leadership, and we wish him the very best in his next chapter.

Introducing James Bordelon, Board Commissioner.

James's career brought him to Pascagoula in 2023 as a program manager at Bollinger Shipyards. James served our country in the military for 11 years in both infantry and special forces.

James brings a unique prospective after losing his wife to mental illness a few years ago. His first hand knowledge of the mental health crisis affecting our residents and their families has given him a proactive stance on mental healthcare availability. He is passionate about serving on our board to ensure Jackson County's community has access to quality mental health services.

We are honored to have James bring his experiences and knowledge to our board.

Did you know South Mississippi Mental Health Center has a Board of Commissioners that helps make the big decisions? Well, we do and we would like our followers to know who they are!

We will start with Dr. Tee McCovey, President & CEO of United Way for Jackson, George, and Greene Counties! He retired as the Regional Director at MDES and now is the owner of TeeMac Global Solutions, LLC and local church pastor. Not only is he a 3-time Athletic Hall of Famer at PHS, MGCCC, and Arkansas College but also played in many countries while serving in the United States Air Force. And still manages to have time to pour into our youth, like coaching 5 Pascagoula League Champion P*e Wee basketball teams.

We are so lucky to have Dr. McCovey serving on our Board of Commissioners.
