I recently had the honor of presenting to Alta Med’s pre-health scholars 🌱

We moved through some yoga together,
We talked about nervous system and self-care,
As well as coregulation & therapeutic presence with patients.
And then we closed with meditation and a sound bath.

Back when I was a pre-medicine student, I didn’t know anything about yoga or meditation. I lived in a state of hypervigilance, not recognizing stress as a primary cause of the myriad symptoms I experienced.

So it means a lot to me to be able to share moments of rest with students on that path. I know it is an intense one. I hope, if nothing else, these bright souls left knowing they are deserving of rest and pause along the way. If you’re reading this, know that you are too.

Thank you to Elba Muñoz, M.A. who was an advisor and mentor of mine back in my pre-med days. Then and now, I feel the depth of your care for everyone you support.

I’ve enjoyed reconnecting with you, Elba, and for the 3rd time now, getting to meet the scholars you serve 💛

books on my shelf about death and grief…
both tender, sacred processes that ask for our full presence, acceptance, surrender, and heart 🙏

some of these I’ve read, some I’m reading now, some next on my list as I prepare to step into the sacred work of hospice and bereavement therapy.

Have you read any of these? What else would you add?

an invitation to leave yourself alone…

“The problem is that the desire to change is fundamentally a form of aggression toward yourself. The other problem is that our hangups, unfortunately or fortunately, contain our wealth. Our neurosis and our wisdom are made out of the same material. If you throw out your neurosis, you also throw out your wisdom. Someone who is very angry also has a lot of energy; that energy is what’s so juicy about him or her. That’s the reason people love that person. The idea isn’t to try to get rid of your anger, but to make friends with it, to see it clearly with precision and honesty, and also to see it with gentleness. That means not judging yourself as a bad person, but also not bolstering yourself up by saying, “It’s good that I’m this way, it’s right that I’m this way. Other people are terrible, and I’m right to be so angry at them all the time.” The gentleness involves not repressing the anger but also not acting it out. It is something much softer and more openhearted than any of that. It involves learning how, once you have fully acknowledged the feeling of anger and the knowledge of who you are and what you do, to let it go. You can let go of the usual pitiful little story line that accompanies anger and begin to see clearly how you keep the whole thing going. So whether it’s anger or craving or jealousy or fear or depression—whatever it might be—the notion is not to try to get rid of it, but to make friends with it. That means getting to know it completely, with some kind of softness, and learning how, once you’ve experienced it fully, to let go.”

I’ve been thinking a lot about grief and death
as I prepare to support others in bereavement.

Next month, I begin my practicum at a hospice center,
serving as a marriage and family therapist in training.

It is a deep honor to bear witness to the courage it takes to grieve, to fully feel loss. Our culture does not give us the time and space to experience wholly its looming waves and dark depths. We must find it ourselves.

I’ve been reading The Smell of Rain on Dust by Martín Prechtel and I’m touched by the holding of grief and praise as two best friends, two sides of the same coin.

Grief and praise…
Grief and love…

What are your thoughts on their relationship to each other?

🕯️thank you to the hearts who shared the words in these images; sources tagged on each slide
